Bill Plaschke to Kobe Bryant: ‘You’re an Asshole’

Playoff time brings out the very worst in Kobe Bryant when it comes to dealing with the media.

He’s notoriously known for his smug and snarky answers during this time of the year and Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke called him out on it following Game 3 of the Los Angeles Lakers-Denver Nuggets Western Conference 1st round series.

Here’s J.A. Adande of ESPN.com explaining the incident:

Props to Plaschke for not backing down to Bryant. The 23-year-old Bryant probably wouldn’t have laughed it off but Kobe, now 33, has finally matured to the point where he can laugh at himself every now and then.

#TheLakersAreSoWhite Reaches Primetime Meme Status

ESPN writer J.A. Adande‘s latest column has officially bestowed superstar meme status on the Twitter hashtag #TheLakersAreSoWhite. For weeks, Lakers fans couldn’t help but notice that even with Mike Brown as the first black head coach in team history, the rest of the Lakers are looking a little ’86 Celtics. (Except for the whole greatest-team-in-NBA-history thing. Sorry, this Fishie grew up in Boston.) Luke Walton, Steve Blake, Jason Kapono, Josh McRoberts and Troy Murphy are all white as Wonderbread–not to mention Pau Gasol, who may be Spanish, but is as pale as they come. We’ve met him.

Writes Adande:

[T]he sight of Blake, Kapono, McRoberts and Murphy on the court with Metta World Peace during a nationally televised game was enough to set Twitter afire and eventually led to a #TheLakersAreSoWhite hashtag that had people of all races chiming in with jokes such as, “#TheLakersAreSoWhite they warm up to Dancing Queen.”

The Lakers are the only NBA team currently capable of putting an all-white-American lineup on the floor. Only three other teams — the Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks — have as many as three white American players. Coach Mike Brown admits he’s heard calls from the fans for him to play all five, but so far he has resisted. That’s left World Peace as the odd man out on the court, as if Ron Artest’s name change didn’t make him stand out enough.

“I’ve never had that before,” World Peace said of his teammates. “It’s kind of cool.”

Baron Davis Aces Play-by-Play Gig

Because of an injury, Baron Davis could not take part in his second annual sold out charity kickball game, held Sunday afternoon on the campus of his Alma Mater Crossroads High School in Santa Monica. So while a whiter, shorter, and more female bearded doppelganger stood in for him on the field, Davis did the PA system play-by-play from a fold-out table on the third base side. The Clipper-turned-Cavalier definitely has a future in broadcasting if he so chooses.

E! Entertainment reporter Ben Lyons redeemed himself from an early, no-call fly ball drop in right field to boot a pair of home runs and almost bring his Black team back from a huge early deficit to the Grey’s. Along with revisiting a recent interview mix-up with Lyons involving MTV, Davis repeatedly warned women in the audience whenever a certain athlete came to the plate. “Ladies, do not look into his eyes. He will hypnotize you.”

Donald Sterling Taking Out Ads in the New York Times: He’s Gonna Need ‘Em

Perhaps sensing that bad news was about to break about his certain predilection for turning the post-game showers of his black basketball players into a spectator sport, Clippers owner Donald Sterling took out some…well, Donald Sterling advertisements in the New York Times last week.

Sterling has purchased similar ads in the LA Times for years, which the LA Weekly‘s Patrick Range McDonald has called him out for repeatedly. Again, McDonald caught this one too.

Clippers Owner Racks Up Another Flagrant Foul

It takes a very special kind of misguided rich-white-guy entitlement to slam dunk sexism and racism in one fell swoop. But Clippers owner Donald Sterling has shown that he possesses that specialness, in spades.

Via inestimable ESPN.com basketball chronicler J.A. Adande comes this absolutely reprehensible new nugget from the legal depositions of former team executive Elgin Baylor:

“Players Sam Cassell (pictured), Elton Brand and Corey Maggette complained to me that Sterling would bring women into the locker room after games, while the players were showering, and make comments such as, ‘Look at those beautiful black bodies.’ I brought this to Sterling’s attention, but he continued to bring women into the locker room.”
