Huffington Post Names First Publisher

The Huffington Post Media Group has named Janet Balis its first Publisher. Balis was most recently Senior Vice President and Head of Sales Strategy, Marketing and Partnerships at AOL. She had held that position since October of 2011 and had previously worked for AOL from 2004 to 2007 as Senior Vice President, Sales Development. In her new role as Publisher, Balis will work to expand HuffPo’s partnerships and help shape marketing strategies.

In other news, HuffPo has named Moritz Loew, formerly Chief Agency Officer for NBC News Digital and General Manager of Sales for MSNBC Interactive, as its new Senior Vice President of Sales. At HuffPo, Loew will lead the sales team and be responsible for generating revenue for all of The Huffington Post Media Group’s sites.

“I’m delighted to welcome Janet Balis and Moritz Loew to HuffPost at a time of unprecedented growth, from the launch of the Huffington Post Streaming Network and the Huffington iPad magazine and GPS for the Soul apps to our international expansions,” said Arianna Huffington, President of HuffPo. “Both Mortiz and Janet, who is already deeply familiar with HuffPost from her time at AOL, have deep roots in digital media, with track records of innovative thinking and leadership that will make them invaluable members of the HuffPost team.”

Martha Stewart EVP: Consumer Marketplace Is ‘Platform Agnostic’

JENNIFER PULLINGER

balis.jpg Will there come a day when online and mobile media overtake traditional media as the best way to reach audiences? Writer Jennifer Pullinger put the question to Janet Balis, executive vice president of media sales and marketing for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and a speaker at the Mediabistro Circus May 20.

“I don’t think the old types of distinctions will matter any more. We won’t think in terms of digital vs. traditional media. I even think that online will become a superfluous designation since most media will be connected to the Internet and/or delivered in digital formats. The definitions for media will shift someday to focus on consumer experiences as defined by new dimensions: passive vs. interactive, individual vs. social, linear vs. non-linear, video vs. photo vs. text vs. commerce, size of the screen, portability of the screen, and that sort of thing.

The channel or device delivering content is less and less important everyday. Ultimately, the quality of the consumer experience and the consumer’s ability to find those experiences are what drive the audience — not the form factors we choose to deliver those experiences. The consumer marketplace is increasingly experience-centric and platform agnostic.”

Janet Balis reveals “The Power of a Cross-Platform Strategy” in her upcoming presentation at Mediabistro Circus on May 20 in New York.

Sales Team Moves At Bonnier, MSLO

Balis-b1.jpgThere’s news of two moves among sales teams at magazine publishers Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Bonnier Corp.

MediaDailyNews reports that MSLO has brought on Janet Balis (left) as executive vice president of media sales and marketing. She will oversee sales across the publishing, broadcast and digital properties and will report to MSLO’s executive chair Charles Koppelman. Balis joins MSLO from her own consutling company Digital Media Strategies, where she has worked for the past year and half. She also previously worked for Time Warner, where she served in positions at Time.com, People.com and AOL.

Over at Bonnier, Chris Allen, VP of group publishing and corporate sales for nine of the company’s travel, shelter and lifestyle titles, is departing after less than a month on the job, Mediaweek reported. Allen was hired to serve in one of two group publishing roles created by Bonnier when it acquired five titles from Hachette Filipacchi last month.

Mediaweek said Allen, who had previously served as publisher for Cooking Light, is leaving without another job lined up.

“It was more of a three- to four-week consulting trial,” Allen told Mediaweek. “I just think the nature of the job to be done on the particular titles was not what I expected it to be. I think I thought it was a larger, more strategic task than it was.”
