A Picture Worth a Thousand Bylines

Since launch in 2009, TheWrap has proven to be a fertile training ground for entertainment journalists. Among the earliest examples of reporters who worked under Sharon Waxman before moving on to other outlets are Amy Kaufman (now with the LA Times), Josef Adalian (Vulture), Hunter Walker (New York Observer), Josh Dickey (Variety), Jeff Sneider (Variety) and Dominic Patten (Deadline).

Still, with the recent departure of Jason Scoggins, Cindy Kaplan and Joshua L. Weinstein for Film Funds LLC, the following photo now stands as a rather graphic representation of the kind of turnover Waxman (and others in the space like The Hollywood Reporter and the LA Times) must sometimes deal with. Of the ten people flanking Waxman in this April 1, 2011 birthday celebration snapshot obtained by FishbowlLA, only one person remains employed with the start-up company today.

Reuters Deal Kicks Off Busy July for Sharon Waxman

This past Friday, TheWrap launched a dramatic expansion of its content syndication partnership with Reuters America. In place of the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, the website will try to help Reuters aggressively go after AP clients, aided by new film critics Alonso Duralde and Leah Rozen and added music critic Chris Willman.

It’s a major coup for website founder Sharon Waxman. FishbowlLA caught up with the former New York Times reporter via telephone on the quiet afternoon of July 1 to get the scoop on how the deal came about.

“Reuters terminated the relationship with the Hollywood Reporter,” Waxman confirmed. “This has been in the works for a while now. It’s a very big deal for Reuters to do this, because they have clients who’ve been getting a certain kind of content need for quite a long time and are accustomed to that. So they have to untangle that and sort of prepare their clients for the fact that it’s going to change.”

TheWrap Scoops Up Script Database ItsontheGrid.com

Looks like TheWrap‘s Sharon Waxman is putting some of that recently raised venture capital to quick use. Ahead of a press release scheduled for this afternoon, TechCrunch.com shares details of her Hollywood news website’s acquisition of ItsontheGrid.com, a subscription service that monitors Hollywood scripts in development and on the fast track.

The man responsible for the website, Jason Scoggins, will be joining TheWrap as its new Chief Product Officer. He will apparently be helping develop a whole range of unspecified products in the coming year.

As the first reader comment to the TechCrunch article so astutely points out, TheWrap‘s acquisition puts it in a uniquely privileged position of being able to suss out newsworthy items about scripts being developed and optioned by Hollywood. It’s also kind of funny that a deal for something called ItsontheGrid.com follows the release of the similarly lingo-ed TRON: Legacy.
