KCRW’s ‘Masquerade Ball’ Rocks the Park Plaza

KCRW’s annual Masquerade Halloween party rocked the Legendary Park Plaza Hotel for the fourth year in a row over the weekend. Your humble Fishie was in attendance and is still recovering. Sadly, he was driving, so he can’t even say he got drunk and hung over. Nay, he’s simply old and out of shape and can’t dance until 2 a.m. anymore without a week of pizza and bed rest to recuperate.

Although Mexican Institute of Sound and Z-Trip both put on great shows, the highlight of the night was undoubtedly seeing John Lydon, better known as the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten, singing along to Deee-Lite’s “Groove Is In the Heart.” Cross that one off the bucket list.

We have to admit, we were a bit disappointed that Masquerade goers didn’t seem to get our brilliant Gordron Gartrelle costume. Although the two people who did thought it was hi-larious. Props to the lovely and talented Jennifer Calica for making the shirt from scratch.

All in all the event raised nearly $70,000 for KCRW’s coffers–topping last year’s effort. A smashing success.

This Weekend’s Halloween Fun

It’s Halloween weekend everyone. FishbowlLA will be out and about in our finest Gordon Gartrell and so should you… Not in Gordon Gartrell though. That’s our thing.

Hollywood Forever’s annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration looks pretty great this year. The theme, not surprisingly with the Mayan calendar apocalypse on everyone’s mind, is the pre-‐Aztec roots of Dia De Los Muertos. On top of learning about the Mayan calendar and why we’re all doomed, there will be live music by Tribu, Very Be Careful and Ozomatili. Party goes from noon to midnight.

Meanwhile, the grandaddy of public radio parties, KCRW’s Masquerade Ball, is going off per usual at the Legendary Park Plaza Hotel. On top of performances by the Mexican Institute of Sound, who we’ve been dying to hear for years, and Z-Trip, we just got word that M-83 and the Sex Pistols legend John Lydon will also have DJ sets. We will definitely be there. If you happen to go and be dressed as Denise from The Cosby Show, flag us down so we can yell “DENISE” at you.

Have fun everyone!

Johnny Rotten Takes a Ride With the LA Times

LA Times music editor Randall Roberts took a two-camera cruise with Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, otherwise known as Johnny Rotten. Among other interesting tidbits from the ride, Lydon professes a love for Mexican Viagra, reveals he used to live in the “religious suburbs” of Pasadena, and takes credit for helping to bring about the modern day paparazzi, who he says “had a free hand with us” back when the Pistols were still big news. Lydon has lived just off the beach in Venice for the past 20 years.

Lydon is also profiled by Roberts in the paper, where talks about “Mr. Rotten’s Scrapbook,” a $750 collection he’s put together of “drawings, paintings, photos, poems, scribbles and reminiscences.”
