Matt Lauer Joins Twitter, Loves Justin Bieber

Did you feel the Earth shake beneath you this morning? Did you happen to notice an unusual amount of delays while on the train? That’s because Matt Lauer decided to join Twitter this morning.

Lauer asked Justin Bieber to help him, so naturally Bieber joke-tweeted from Lauer’s account that everyone should go buy his upcoming album. Hahahaha! What a funny time in America!

As of now, all four of Lauer’s tweets are about The Biebs. Let’s hope things change soon.

Academic Paper Quantifies ‘Bieber Fever’

Early on in the 21-page treatise “A Mathematical Model of Bieber Fever: The Most Infectious Disease of Our Time?,” University of Ottawa student Valerie Tweedle warns that “tabloid journalism may be our last, best hope” against this fast-moving media blight. In other words, only a sensationally negative scandal can (eventually) impede the constant flow on Twitter, Facebook and in the MSM of contagious news about the Canadian-born superstar.

Some north-of-the-border outlets were skeptical today about the document’s authenticity. But per a report on Canadian Press, the cheeky analysis earned Tweedle top marks from her teacher Dr. Robert J. Smith:

The study is a real modelling exercise, with the phenomenal growth in Bieber’s popularity — as evidenced by Twitter mentions and Google searches — used as a stand-in for the way an infectious disease spreads. Tweedle’s original work helped earned her an A-plus in Smith’s class…

“Obviously it’s not formally a disease, but it has the hallmarks of a disease,” Smith says about The Fever. “And so it behaves the way a disease would…”

The 90-year-old Betty White has joined the social networking service, likely making her one of the oldest users on Twitter in the process.

The Hot in Cleveland star is more popular than ever, racking up 40,000 Twitter followers in only five hours.

Religion Writer Vets Justin Bieber’s Newest Tattoo

Photos taken on Wednesday of Justin Bieber in Venice Beach were big news across the Web, because they exposed his latest tattoo. It’s another image of Jesus Christ, this time on the back of his left calf.

However, according to Mollie Ziegler of GetReligion.org, the Daily Mail got it wrong when they reported that the image was inspired by a 1610 Rubens fresco. She jokes that this topic may not be the most pressing issue to cover, but that she is doing so because her item earlier in the week about Christians in Nigeria got almost no hits:

I think the inspiration [for the Bieber tattoo] is the image I picture above (which I guess is a computer generated image of much more recent vintage, also done in the Ecce Homo style). This isn’t a science, but… I think it looks closer to the Ecce Homo I embedded at the top of the post. It even looks closer to Guido Rene’s Ecce Homo than Rubens, doesn’t it?

In 2011 Mila Kunis Moved Magazines, Justin Bieber Did Not

If you’re into big names, WWD has a great roundup of the best (and worst) selling magazine covers featuring celebrities this year. While some celebrities made for an up and down impact — Kim Kardashian, for one — others meant great (0r terrible) numbers for titles.

Mila Kunis was the big winner of the year. If a magazine had her on the front, people were buying it. Her GQ cover was the title’s best-seller, but there was more:

She took to W in March and delivered sales 15 percent above average for the fashion monthly. She was the February cover star of Cosmopolitan and brought in 1.7 million sales, which is nearly 10 percent better than the monthly’s average for the first half. And then she graced the cover of Elle in August in a portrait with Justin Timberlake, which brought in 250,000 sales, fourth best of the year for Elle.

We get the Kunis thing. She’s smart, funny, successful and well, someday your FishbowlNY editors hope to have hair that fabulous.

HollywoodLife.com Makes Up Justin Bieber Story*

It apparently wasn’t enough for HollywoodLife.com to pass on a bogus MSN.com story yesterday about Justin Bieber spending lots of time at the Playboy Mansion (and get called on it about five hours later). Today, the Penske Media outlet plows forward with EXCLUSIVE details about some of the reasons why this 17-year-old loves to hang in Holmby Hills.

But according to GossipCop.com, this slant is about as real as most Playmate bosoms. The celebrity media watchdog restates today that a rep for the singer confirmed Bieber has never been to the Playboy Mansion.

The only thing funnier than the fact that there are two bylined reporters (Russ Weakland, William Earl) for the December 20 HollywoodLife.com item is this part of the quote from an anonymous source: “Also, when he [Bieber] is there, it’s one of the few times that he really feels like a celebrity, so it is a major ego-booster.”

Charlie Sheen Isn’t #Winning at Twitter

Charlie Sheen accidentally tweeted his phone number to the internet.

“310-954-7277 Call me bro. C.” was supposed to be a direct message to Justin Bieber, but Twitter is hard for The Olds. According to the NY Post, Sheen was promptly besieged by countless phone calls and texts. His number has since been shut down.

It’s no surprise that the drug-addled Sheen had a Twitter blunder, but why the heck is he DMing Justin Bieber in the first place? No one over the age of 17 has any business sending their phone # to the Beebs. You stay away from that kid, Charlie. You got nothing he needs.

Casey Anthony Trial the Most Searched News Story of 2011

Casey Anthony Trial” was the most searched news story of the year, according to a study released by Bing. Following behind Casey Anthony was Osama bin Laden Death, Hurricane Irene, Japan Earthquake/Tsunami and Amy Winehouse Death, respectively. Bing, a search engine used by those who have gone temporarily insane and thus forgot about Google, added up all of the website’s searches for the results.

Some other interesting finds: The Kardashian sisters all made the top five for most searched “reality star,” the “Today” show was the most searched morning program and Justin Bieber was the most searched person of the year.

The Biebs was also the most searched musician, meaning “Bieber for President in 2029″ is going to happen. And no, it won’t matter that he’s not a citizen, the man is unstoppable.
