Los Angeles Press Club Announces Finalists for 53rd SoCal Journalism Awards

Because the Los Angeles Press Club’s annual SoCal Journalism Awards derby is a fee-based endeavor, many outlets and reporters do not participate. This year, per-item entry fees ranged from $40 to $125, depending on applicant membership status and whether the entry came in ahead of an “Early Bird” deadline.

Still, it all goes to support a great, non-profit organization, and the range of local and regional outlets represented remains impressive. You can read the extensive list of finalists here. In the meantime, a few quick FishbowlLA observations:

- Although the president of the LA Press Club worked at KCRW, all four finalists fo Radio Journalist of the Year are from cross-town public radio rival KPCC (Kitty Felde, Molly Peterson, Susan Valot, Brian Watt). So you definitely can’t accuse the organization of favoritism.

KPCC: 16% of The Hill’s 50 Most Beautiful People are Californian

Yes, we are not only hot – we export our hotness, apparently, to one of the ugliest towns in America – DC. The Hill’s annual 50 Most Beautiful People List this year was heavy on California babes according to KPCC’s Kitty Felde.

Also on the list: 27-year-old San Dimas native Bret Manley. He advises Republican Congressman Gary Miller of Diamond Bar on financial services issues. Manley says he was nominated before. “But they didn’t pick me. So I was like all right, fine. Go through this whole song and dance again, not get picked, and then you know, life goes on.”

He sounds a bit embarrassed or ambivalent about all of the attention. “I’m going to have fun with it for a day,” he says. “Or whatever. And then everybody’ll forget about it and I’ll go back to life as usual.”

Manley is also listed in “The Hill” profile as single. So far, he hasn’t gotten any phone calls from interested parties. “No. That would be creepy, I think. Slightly.”
