On the Road with Laura Albert & Alan Feuer

Albertspan.jpg

Laura Albert, JT LeRoy’s mom, creator, alter-ego, alias, drives down the coast with Alan Feuer, her NY Times enabler. (Sorry, but that’s what he is.) It takes her nearly as long to get out the door as to drive from SF to LA, but thankfully Ms. Albert didn’t take the wheel.

Idle thought: why didn’t she get into the LeRoy drag and hang around some truck stops on the way?

The piece ends pretty abruptly as did the excursion, the greater purpose of which seems to have been to glom on to David Milch, the Deadwood creator who had been something of a mentor to Albert. Feuer writes:

After small talk had determined the reporter was indeed a human being, a request was made to turn the tape recorder off–at which point the interview became an intervention.

Mr. Milch was stern.

Shut your mouth, he told Ms. Albert. Quit this sick behavior. Disengage. Forget the press. Go home. Be still. Get healthy. Raise your child. And pray that you can write.

He then reached in his pocket and gave Ms. Albert five crisp hundred-dollar bills.

That’s not an intervention, that’s good advice. Did the NY Times finance this little stunt? Is Feuer in love with his subject?

GalleyCat has been following Feuer’s coverage of Albert, and has a more literary view. Hollywood is a far tougher town than New York.

Sundown on Sunset: The Sweet Life

What a week!

Pinkberry sells not-too-sweet goo made from food-like products.

Speaking of sweet goo, the Spice Girls are re-uniting.

Hilary Clinton is also a fan of sweet goo.

Justice is sweet: Laura Albert, aka JT LeRoy, was found guilty of fraud.

Life in downtown LA is sweet, and getting sweeter, according to Variety.

Sweet talk didn’t work for Randy Cohen, aka The Ethicist.

Countdown to Harry Potter–might be sweet, might be goo, will be terrific.

Laura Albert Takes the Stand/Mystery Doc. Maker Revealed

JT Leroy’s creator/channeler Laura Albert may have made a fatal error of judgment (besides the obvious ones). She’s being sued for fraud by a film company that bought the rights to Leroy’s book, Sarah. The Washington Post quotes Marjorie Sturm, a San Francisco-based poet/musician/filmmaker (complete with Noam Chomsky as a MySpace friend) who actually caught the implications of Albert’s recent testimony:

I was wondering if Laura would show up and say, ‘I couldn’t tell the difference between JT and me. But that’s not what she’s saying. She’s saying, ‘I was in complete control.’

According to Stephen Beachy who broke this story,

She (Sturm) had been hired by JT at some point to make a documentary, but they killed it when they realized that Savannah Knoop, who played JT in public, would be recognized. Marjorie has all of this footage from early on, and she’s interviewed everyone involved with the story, with the exception of Laura.

GalleyCat Meets Laura Albert

Fans of a certain genre will delight in knowing that our own GalleyCat, Ron Hogan, caught up with the not-quite-elusive-enough Laura Albert, aka JT LeRoy.

She’s not sorry, she’s moving on, yadda yadda yadda.

As they say:

there ain’t no vista, there ain’t no view, and there certainly ain’t no vista of no view.
