Flawless Lupita Nyong’o is Flawless on Vogue Cover

Lupita Nyong’o has landed what promises to be the first of many Vogue covers. And, of course, she looks amazing. The 31-year-old actress was photographed by Mikael Jansson.

In the accompanying profile, Nyong’o was lavished with plenty of praise. While that’s not surprising, we were taken aback when Nyong’o expressed admiration for Star Wars’ R2-D2 and C-3PO.

“They just resonated with me,” she explained. “Being able to convey emotions with just a few digital sounds — it speaks of good storytelling.” Uh, sure! Whatever. She’s great. She can like Jabba the Hutt for all we care.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Lands Second Opinion Column

ShutterstockKareemAbdulJabbarWOFOn sports talk radio this week, more than a few callers were dropping the name of the Lakers all-time blocks and personal fouls leader as a potential candidate to replace Mike D’Antoni. But the way things are going, Kareem is going to be way too busy asking questions as a journalist to entertain the idea of answering them as an NBA coach.

On the heels of joining the Los Angeles Register as a Wednesday columnist, the master of the sky hook has been afforded some similar, bi-monthly real estate with Time. Abdul-Jabbar will appear online, in print and in a regular video series. He will also, this weekend, be sitting at Time‘s White House Correspondents Dinner table alongside actress Lupita NYong’o, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and others.

Although Kareem might have glossed over in his first Time contribution one key aspect relating to release of the Donald Sterling audio recording, it is the reaction to that great overall piece that led the magazine to bring him on as a regular columnist. We’re referring to the fact that Kareem did not mention V. Stiviano‘s adamant claims that she was asked by Sterling to record the conversation as part of a larger, “archivist” role. From Kareem’s piece:

Shouldn’t we be equally angered by the fact that his private, intimate conversation was taped and then leaked to the media? Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way? Although the impact is similar to Mitt Romney’s comments that were secretly taped, the difference is that Romney was giving a public speech. The making and release of this tape is so sleazy that just listening to it makes me feel like an accomplice to the crime.

Lupita Nyong’o is People’s ‘Most Beautiful’ Person

Lupita Nyong’o, the 31-year-old Oscar winning actress, has been named People’s Most Beautiful person. And since we know no one will disagree with that, what else do you want to discuss today? Seriously, she’s gorgeous.

Nyong’o described the Most Beautiful honor as “exciting” and a “major accomplishment,” because “I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [the cover] and feel a little more seen.” This woman is fantastic.

People’s Most Beautiful issue hits newsstands April 25.

Willy Wonka and the Strange Oscar Night References

A lot of folks were puzzled last night on Twitter during the Oscars when the show orchestra, from several miles away at Capitol Records, played off Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o with the song “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s the ditty Gene Wilder intones when his group of visitors first catches a glimpse of the magical candy kingdom.

Bob Costas Co-Chairs The Dan Patrick Show

Post-Sochi, Bob Costas spent nearly two full hours this morning hanging out with Dan Patrick in the Man Cave. The NBC Sports colleagues began of course by revisiting the Winter Olympics eye mess, followed by a series of high-profile phone-in guests.

LupitaNyongo12YearsSlaveMatt Lauer reacted to Patrick’s joking revelation that DP had faked sickness in Sochi once it became obvious that Lauer and then Vieira were getting the prized opportunity to replace the sidelined Costas. Race car driver Jeff Gordon compared notes with Costas on some of the celebrities who live in their shared New York City high rise (Sting, Denzel Washington). And Chicago Sun-Times film critic Richard Roeper jumped in to talk Oscars.

Although Patrick hasn’t seen most of this year’s nominated movies, he ran through some confident predictions for the major categories. While Roeper agreed that Lupita Nyong’o will likely take Best Supporting Actress from Jennifer Lawrence, he wasn’t so sure about Patrick’s Best Picture lock. Roeper thinks Gravity may well pull off the “upset” over 12 Years a Slave.

Vanity Fair Under Fire for February Lupita Nyong’o Photo

Was the 30-year-old Kenyan’s skin deliberately lightened? Or was it a matter of too-bright, washed out lighting? That’s the debate raging on Twitter and the Web after Vanity Fair on Wednesday shared a sneak peak of a shot of 12 Years a Slave co-star Lupita Nyong’o featured in the February issue “Vanities” section.
