Marty Peretz To Drop Editor-In-Chief Title At The New Republic

While he may be the longtime owner of political mag The New Republic, Marty Peretz has not been an active editor for the publication for years.  Peretz has shed himself of the editor-in-chief title and will leave that role to Richard Just, the man who took over for Franklin Foer in December.  According to the New York Post’s Keith Kelly, Peretz left a farewell note explaining why he has relieved himself of the editor role.

I have been with The New Republic going on 37 years, almost all of them with the title of editor-in-chief.  The truth is that I hardly ever actually edited an article for the magazine. But, frankly, it was my vision and the vision of my compatriots of what was needed for a serious journal of opinion in American society that defined what TNR has become since 1974.

The 70-year-old Peretz, who now resides in Israel, added that he will serve as editor-in-chief emeritus and contribute to TNR’s website.

Sold! Peretz Buys Back The New Republic

newrpungg.pngMichael Calderone at Politico has confirmed last week’s rumor that former New Republic owner Marty Peretz will be buying back the magazine from struggling CanWest. And it turns out Paul Waldman at The Daily Beast wasn’t so far off when he threw Laurence Grafstein‘s name into the mix — the Lazard executive will be leading a the group of investors.

Peretz tells Calderone the deal is underway and an official announcement will be made later today: “Something is happening today that I am very happy about…There is a group of us that are acquiring the New Republic from CanWest.” Peretz also confirms that editorially the paper will continue as is.

Peretz Interested in Reacquiring The New Republic?

frontpage.jpgThere’s been a lot of talk lately about how Canada has managed to bypass much of the recession that is currently walloping the US. However one company to the North that is feeling the pain is CanWest, Canada’s largest newspaper publisher, and owner of a number of international media properties including The New Republic, which it took over from owner Marty Peretz in February, 2007.

Now that the media conglomerate is teetering financially Folio: is reporting they may be looking to sell the 94 year old magazine “with a long and storied history.” And rumor has it original owner Peretz could be interested in re-acquiring it either alone or with investors (Peretz has refused to comment). However, Paul Waldman at The Daily Beast suggests that Laurence Grafstein, until recently a top executive at Lazard who also served on the magazine’s board, could also be interested.
