So Long and Thanks For All the Fish… BowlLA!

I was offered a gig as managing editor of the award-winning mega-blog Crooks and Liars and I’ve decided to take it. Regrettably, this means I will not have the time to blog here any longer. So because I’ve been an editor at FishbowlLA for over three years–the longest I’ve ever worked anywhere (I am a freelancer)–I wanted to pen my own exit interview:

Q. What is the weirdest thing to happen to you at FishbowlLA?

A. Remember the Mini Me sex tape? Vern Troyer had this tape leaked of he and his girlfriend going at it. The girlfriend just so happened to look a lot like my co-editor at the time, Mayrav Saar. So I thought it would be hilarious (it was) to write a post with the image saying, “We just wanted to get in front of this – this is NOT Mayrav in the Mini Me sex tape.” The next day we got a cease and desist letter from Troyer’s lawyers telling us to take down the image. So the weirdest? A cease and desist from Mini Me’s attorney over an in-office joke.

See my response to the lawyer here.

Trish Sie’s OK Go Video

Make sure to check out Mayrav Saar‘s interview with Trish Sie in the wake of her Sarah Palin video in 2008.

Tucker Max‘s much anticipated (cough) movie is coming out this week.

First off, as we have suggested in the past – Tucker Max was your former FBLA editor, Mayrav Saar‘s drag king name for many many years. And this tool bag blogger totally ripped her off. Her new one? Blazen Wand. Shh. Don’t tell her we dished.

Anyway, LAist gave the movie I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell a pretty stellar review. Of course Max sued their sister blog Bostonist for libel. We emailed the editor for comment. We’re waiting to hear back.

The picture above, taken and sent to us by Evan Meyer on 3rd Street in LA, is of an anti-Tucker Max – we mean anti-rape product known as Rape-aXe. It’s a little like the reported Va Fan Culo in New York. But it’s LA, so the campaign is not just denouncing something – it’s advertising something else.

We did watch the two-minute trailer and it brings to mind the quote from Keith Olbermann minutes after Sarah Palin was unleashed onto the world,”People who like this type of thing are going to find that this is the type of thing they like.”

Also check out our sister blog AgencySpy for the ads for the movie that were too harsh to make the cut.

  • LA Times Gets Mostly Snubbed by the Webbys This Year

logo_webbyawards_md222.pngOh yes, it’s like the 2008 Pulitzers all over again. The New York Times gets some shout outs and LA Times isn’t even mentioned in passing. You’d think the thing wasn’t on the web at all.

Other winners are our lovely former FBLA editor Mayrav Saar‘s hubby Glenn Gaslin who works on the E! Blog Red Carpet, that won the People’s Voice Award for Celebrity/Fan.

    Special Achievement Awards

  • Webby Artist of the Year: Trent Reznor
  • Webby Person of the Year: Jimmy Fallon
  • Webby Breakout of the Year: Twitter
  • Best Actress: Sarah Silverman
  • Outstanding Comedic Performance: Lisa Kudrow
  • Film & Video Person of the Year: Seth MacFarlane

Mayrav’s Sister is Also an Adorable Journo

    O.M.G!

Anyway, Danielle Saar just got hired by St. Petersburg CBS affiliate WTSP for their morning show.

    TampaBay.com reports:

Saar, 26, was a “one-man-band” journalist in Colorado Springs, reporting and filming stories herself in a trend sweeping smaller stations looking to curb costs.

Mayrav Saar Wants You To Live…To 120

mayrav22.jpgYour favorite former FBLA editor Mayrav Saar had a lengthy piece in the New York Post over the weekend. It’s about living to be 120 years old. Mayrav, in her early 30′s, is writing at a 72 year old level in her latest and greatest. Someone needs to tell this woman she’s not a Baby Boomer.

    Anyway, Saar tells us:

Hey you. This may be my last newspaper story ever. I start my new job as program director for the Board of Rabbis on Monday! Happy New Year!

Good luck to you Mayrav! Meh. Newspapering. It’s a 71-year-old’s business anyway.

    Camera Clutching Children Chasing Celebrities

    07kid650.2.jpg

FBLA’s Mayrav Saar chronicles the dark world of Hollywood paparazzi, or rather the underage version in the NY Times. Something tells us that this was cleaned up for the Hannah Montana crowd. What else can explain this circumlocution:

Kim Kardashian, a mischievous confidant of Ms. Hilton

That’s one way to put it.

Austin Visschedyk, who was one half of Pintsize Paparazzi, has a mom who must have been in Dina Lohan’s Mommy and Me group:

“I’m very supportive of it.” She added: “He’s a real bright kid. He’s careful. He can get just as injured in sports at school.”

That’s not what she told the LA Times, back in June. Austin has his own website, as he’s an artist, as opposed to his friend Blaine Hewison. Hewison’s dad drives the kid around in his Porsche.

The boys are represented by aptly-named Jeffery Wank and World of Wonder is working on a reality show. Blaine’s photo of Britney flipping off the world was a highlight of their recent Just Britney show.

With any luck, in a couple of years, both boys can start dating their celebrity quarry, and then, make best selling sex tapes–but artistic ones.

Saar On Silverman in NY Times

    silverman.jpg

Over the weekend, Mayrav Saar, whose name should be familiar to faithful readers, writes of 87 year old Malibu scenester, Mike Silverman, in the NY Times. He lives next door to the notorious Polaroid Party House and seems to enjoy it immensely.

Bob Pool, writing on the same topic in the LA Times, missed or ignored Silverman and got the cranky neighbors to go on the record, because no one has any fun in LA.

OC Register Columnist on Paris and Penis

    Prostate_cancer.gif

Mayrav Saar (yes, the same one) continues her love affair with her husband’s manliness by writing about Paris Hilton in the Orange County Register. Think we’re kidding? Read:

I pity poor Paris. Since she’s a celebutante, the First Amendment allows people to flap their gums about her dealings with the penal system all they want. Same can’t be said for Hubby and his penile system.

And of course, she attracts attention from the readership:

What a bunch of garbage. If you want to make light of serious issues to make a point then you should write for the Onion. If you just want to make light of serious issues you shouldn’t write.

We’re guessing that the incarceration of Paris Hilton is a very serious issue down there. Or that down there is a very serious issue–and not just in Paris.

No Such Thing As Bad PR

prwkk.jpgWe love PR people. They’re always dressed nicely. They usually smell good. And they gobble up interview questions, like this one in PRWeek for FBLA Co-Editor Kate Coe:

PRWeek: Since you and Mayrav Saar took over as co-editors of FishbowlLA, you’ve transformed it from a good and entertaining blog to an LA media-community essential. How did you get involved with the site?

Indeed, Kate, how did we do that? For more, find out here.
