Uri Friedman Named Global Editor of TheAtlantic.com

The AtlanticUri Friedman is rejoining The Atlantic as global editor of its website, TheAtlantic.com. Friedman comes to The Atlantic from Foreign Policy, where he served as deputy managing editor. Friedman is succeeding Olga Khazan, who is moving into a writing role.

In related news, Moisés Naím is joining TheAtlantic.com as contributing editor to the global channel. Moisés was editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy from 1996 to 2010, and most recently served as chief international columnist for El Pais and La Repubblica, newspapers in Spain and Italy, respectively.

Freelance Journalism’s Downside Perfectly Captured [Update]

Nate Thayer, a veteran journalist, posted on his blog an email exchange between The Atlantic’s global editor — Olga Khazan — and himself, that is guaranteed to frustrate you if you’ve ever freelanced. Thankfully, Thayer deals with the emails in the best way possible.

It began with Khazan emailing Thayer to ask about republishing something he had written on The Atlantic. This part is great. Any freelancer would be ecstatic to have such a respected publication (or any publication, really) contact them. Typically freelancers are the ones doing the asking. But as the emails went back and forth, things quickly got depressing.

When Thayer asked for specifics about the piece, Khazan wrote that The Atlantic couldn’t pay Thayer for his work, “but we do reach 13 million readers a month.” Ah, the old, “We can’t pay you, but think of the exposure you’ll get as we make money off of your piece!” What a fantastic deal.

The Atlantic Hires Three, Makes Editorial Changes

The Atlantic has made several moves today, including three new hires and two editorial changes. Below are the highlights, followed by the memo announcing the moves.

  • Olga Khazan comes to the magazine from The Washington Post. She will serve as editor of the Global Channel for TheAtlantic.com.
  • Elisa Glass joins the team as an art director. She most recently held the same role for Northern Virginia magazine.
  • Esther Yi comes to The Atlantic as an associate editor.
  • Garance Franke-Ruta, most recently the politics channel editor for the website, will now cover the subject as a full-time writer.
  • David Graham will succeed Franke-Ruta as politics editor for TheAtlantic.com.
