Outside Seeks Inspiring Adventure Stories With a Strong News Hook

Outside-Oct-2014-coverOutside, which was founded in 1977, has gone through plenty of reinventions. These days, the mag’s audience is 70 percent male and the pub targets not only those whose days typically involve black-diamond runs, but the city office worker as well, holed up in his cubicle as he saves vacation days for an epic outdoor adventure.

Best bets for Outside newbies are “Dispatches,” from the FOB and “Bodywork,” the magazine’s fitness section, which accepts news items as short as 100 words and reports as long as 1200. Whether you’re pitching stories on exploration, sports, fitness or the environment, make sure it’s timely:

Don’t pitch travel roundups without a news peg. “A pitch on the best hikes in the National Parks probably won’t get you far,” said [senior editor Abe Streep]. But travel news that leads to actionable service — say, a story on how the Grand Canyon’s new permitting system for rafters affects readers — is very welcome. News that leads to service is the ideal: new lodges, new technology, new training tools.

Outside Revamps Website

Outside, the outdoor enthusiast magazine from Mariah Media, has given its website a refresh. The site features responsive design that makes it fluid on all devices. definitely feels slick as you browse. That, according to Outside, was a key goal for the revamp. About 55 percent of the site’s traffic comes from mobile devices, so the team wanted a site that was fast, clean and easy to digest.

“Our audience is always on-the-go, pivoting from one adventure to the next,” Outside’s site director, Todd Hodgson, said in a statement. “We’d be crazy not to provide them a beautiful mobile and tablet experience.”

New York’s Outside Television Names Emmy-Award Winning SVP

6a00d83453140969e20128762a988c970c-450wi.jpgRob Faris has an impressive resume: an Emmy-winner for his work on the Summer Olympics in Athens for NBC, a producer at ESPN and Madison Square Garden and, most recently, an executive producer at Voom HD, a Cablevision-owned network of high-definition stations.

Luckily Faris’ many talents will not be going to waste at his new job as senior vice president of programming and production at Outside Television, the vacation/resort network that launched 10 days ago. Outside, a collaboration between Outside magazine’s publisher Mariah Media and Resort Sports Network, will broadcast at over 100 resort destinations throughout the U.S.

Says Outside’s CEO Mark Burchill of the hire, “Rob is the strongest candidate to guide our new initiatives.” That might be something of an understatement, considering the producer’s accomplishments.

AARP Names New Deputy Editor, Photo Director

aarp.pngYesterday, AARP The Magazine announced the promotion of features editor Marilyn Milloy to deputy editor, while acting director of photography Quentin Nardi was appointed photo director.

Milloy, who will manage AARP‘s feature editorial staff, oversee the story lineup and work to expand the world’s largest circulation magazine’s online presence, was named features editor at the pub in 2007. She previously worked for Newsday and NEA Today, the magazine published by the National Education Association, where she was editor-in-chief. She also helped develop the print and online package “1968: The Year that Rocked our World,” which won AARP its first National Magazine Award.

Before joining AARP Nardi worked at a number of publications, including Go magazine, Ski magazine, Outside magazine, Bon Appetit and Men’s Journal.

Exclusive: Outside Plagued by Layoffs, Late Payments to Freelancers

cover_mar2009_toc.jpgYesterday, we received a tip that in the past six months Outside and Outside’s Go had laid off employees, cut pay of remaining staffers, and was waiting more than half a year to pay some freelancers. After speaking with a half a dozen former Outside staffers and freelancers, we’ve confirmed that the tip is true and the reality isn’t pretty.

In the past six months at Outside, between five and seven people (from a staff of roughly 50) have been laid off, editor Christopher Keyes told us. Three of these layoffs came when Outside’s Go dropped to four issues per year. Furthermore, there have been two rounds of pay cuts for senior staffers — and one for junior staffers — and the company is imposing a weeklong furlough in June, applicable to all employees except sales staff.

“Like every other magazine, we are looking to weather the current conditions,” Keyes said. “We have a five-week production cycle in June, so we are having a furlough. It’s company-wide but salespeople will be working that week.”

Keyes stressed that the pub has always taken a long time to pay writers, but they always get paid. “While it’s true that Outside has a long payment cycle, it’s an independent publication and in 32 years we’ve never defaulted on a payment. There’s no doubt people will be paid.”

While paying freelancers late “has always been an Outside thing,” according to one source, in conjunction with the deteriorating economic climate, “it’s only gotten worse.” Multiple people with intimate knowledge of the situation at Outside reported payments being sent an average of four to six months after publication, with some invoices nine to 12 months past due. One person confirms being owed more than $10,000, and sources say that’s the case for other contractors, as well.

A particular point of freelancer ire is how Outside sends reporters and photographers around the world, with them fronting the cost of those trips for overly long periods of time. One person said the magazine’s failure to reimburse these expenses in a timely fashion puts the writers and photographers in a difficult position, as they can have thousands of dollars on their credit cards for half a year or more. “A lot of people want to work for Outside because they send people all over the planet, but it’s very expensive and freelancers expense everything,” the source explained. “[Outside owner Larry Burke]‘s mentality is, ‘Hey, I sent you to the far reaches of the world, you should feel lucky.’ You can’t do business like that.”

Payment delays are apparently taking a toll on the magazine’s famed freelancing ranks. “Men’s Journal pays better and on time, so why would I even bother with Outside,” said a freelancer who’s written for the two competing pubs.

Several of the sources who spoke with FishbowlNY said that even amid the magazine’s payment delays, they were repeatedly assured that Outside wasn’t in financial trouble, although one person did equate securing payment from the company to “squeezing blood from a turnip.” We also obtained an internal company email indicating that Outside sought investors in March 2008. (It’s after the jump and includes the plea, “It would help to have a warm body in that office.”) [UPDATE: A clarification -- The company was seeking investors for Go only.]

Keyes assured FBNY that Outside is in good financial standing. “I feel really good about our longterm viability,” he said. “This April’s issue is 140 pages, while last year’s was 136.”

Some people we spoke with question the continued publication of Go earlier this year, especially given the battered market. (Best Life, a similarly themed book, folded earlier this March.) Ironically, Go is reportedly paying its writers more quickly than parent Outside — although still months late — but many within the company wonder why the money-hemorrhaging magazine still exists.

Outside’s Go Folds Down to Two Issues in ’09

cover_2008_2009_dec_jan_large.jpgFishbowlNY has learned that Outside’s Go the bi-monthly magazine aimed at “affluent men who have a taste for adventurous travel and the means to experience it in its rarest forms,” has folded decided to publish just two issues next year, down from its usual bimonthly publishing schedule. The magazine was a spin-off of Outside and launched in Spring of 2007, initially as a quarterly and then as a bi-monthly in 2008.

Like we said, Fridays are tough these days, particularly for niche magazines.

UPDATE: A company spokesperson tells us the magazine did not fold, but will drop down to two issues in ’09, with the intention of “ramping back up in 2010,” and that “the editor-in-chief and publisher are still there.” Phew, that was a close one…
