Tomorrow, mediabistro.com is fêting author — and mediabistro instructor — Lauren Lipton with a party to celebrate her book “Mating Rituals of the North American WASP.” There will be appropriately preppy drink specials ($4 Cape Codders anyone?), free copies of the book and lots of pastel polo shirts and khaki pants.

So drape a sweater over your shoulders and stop by Metro 53 (307 E. 53rd St. between 1st and 2nd Aves) at 6:30 p.m. You can even quiz Lipton about how to land an agent before she teaches the class next month.

The hacks managed to pull out a Guitar Hero win at last night’s Hacks ‘n Flacks party at Artica Bar. Our win was, in large part, due to the amazing GH stylings of AgencySpy‘s Matt Van Hoven, and no thanks to FishbowlNY editor Amanda Ernst, who was crushed by PRNewser‘s Joe Ciarallo during the first round of the competition.

The bar was jammed with journalists and publicists mingling, drinking and enjoying the sounds of Aerosmith-themed Guitar Hero — despite the occasional video booing when players couldn’t complete a round.

One hack and one flack — the high scorers on each side after several rounds of play — scored two free passes each to Mediabistro’s media panel on Thursday.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and a very special thanks to those who bravely attempted to play Guitar Hero. We know it wasn’t easy, especially with everyone staring at your butt!

Last night, we hit the ritzy party celebrating the launch of Page Six deputy editor Paula Froelich‘s first novel, “Mercury in Retrograde.” The party, hosted by Estee Lauder exec John Demsey in his sprawling Upper East Side townhouse, was filled with Froelich’s friends like Cosmopolitan editor Kate White, “Today” show host Hoda Kotb, actress Katrina Bowden from “30 Rock,” former Fishbowlers Rachel Sklar and Glynnis MacNicol and Froelich’s latest Page Six co-worker Neel Shah. We offered Paula congratulations amid the free-flowing rose and bacon and peanut butter hors d’ouevres but caught up with her today via email to get some insight on “Mercury.”

“I wrote a novel because — well, I’ve always been a good story teller and thought, if I can write the way I talk: it’ll be amazing!” she told FishbowlNY. “I just wanted to write about women in general.”

Traditionally, media types like to party amongst themselves, dress up in tuxedos and eat chocolate fondue and call it an industry confab. But times are tough. As the print media shrinks, so too do the glitzy, pricey conferences.

Both the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Magazine Publishers of America have canceled their annual meetings this year due to high price tags and low expected attendance.

However, sometimes the show must go on. Last week, the American Society of Magazine Editors held their 44th Annual National Magazine awards dinner, albeit with some modifications — they dumped the popular chocolate fondue, scaled back the cheese bar and decided not to ask attendees to don black tie attire, Forbes reported.

Meanwhile, here at Mediabistro we’re gearing up for a conference of our own, Mediabistro Circus, which is going on as planned on June 2-3. We’ll be there, will you?
