University of Oklahoma Grad Joins the New York Times

Keep an eye on Bryan Scott Dugan. We have a feeling this freshly-minted journalism grad is going places.

Along with helping edit Mental Floss magazine, Dugan is also as of July 31 full-time with the New York Times. But he’s not quite in the big city yet. Instead, per a nice write-up on, this member of the Native American Journalists Association and Cherokee Nation citizen is getting his feet wet in the Sunshine State:

Dugan is working at the newspaper’s editing center in Gainesville, Florida, which serves as an area for copy editors to prepare stories for the paper’s national and international editions and other newspapers that subscribe to receive the New York Times articles.

Dugan is a copy editor for the wire service and a designer for international versions of the newspaper.

New LA Weekly Editor is Owner’s Ex-Girlfriend

Wow. Neon Tommy’s Benjamin Gottlieb dug up a rather sensational scoop in a well-reported story on incoming LA Weekly editor-in-chief Sarah Fenske. It turns out that back when Fenske was a columnist for the Phoenix New Times a few years ago, she dated Mike Lacey–owner of the Weekly‘s parent company Village Voice Media.

This guy:

“We haven’t been involved for years,” Fenske told Neon Tommy. “I would hope that my work would stand for itself.”

Fair enough. Gross though. Very gross.

Busted: Anna Nicole’s Love Child Hoax

Remember Anna Nicole’s secret love child? The one she had with Johnny Soto via his authentic Native American “bow and arrow”, according to Charles Tatum in the Phoenix New Times. But those investigative geniuses at Inside Edition weren’t so sure:

But there were things about the story that just didn’t seem right to INSIDE EDITION.

So, some segment producer made a few phone calls, or rather Inside Edition found out it was all a hoax! Inside Edition tracked down the Phoenix New Times editor and found out that that the piece was intended as satire.

Incredibly, the newspaper’s editor admitted the story was totally false.

Inside Edition finds it incredible that the editor admitted to the fabrication–something they would never do, not that they ever make anything up.

Does Anna Nicole Smith Have a Love Chiild on the Reservation?

Does Anna Nicole Smith Have a Love Chiild on the Reservation?

The Phoenix New Times has another chapter in the Anna Nicole Smith saga: her Native American son, Marshall Soto. Charles Tatum reports on Johnny Soto, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, who claims he had a passionate affair with Smith in 2001 and she bore a son (after hiding the pregnancy). Soto has the birth certificate and other documents to prove it. But the romance had a sordid side:

“Sometimes I felt like I was being used, and it left a bad taste in my mouth,” says Soto. “But I was just as guilty as she was. The only whites I’d ever had sex with were prostitutes, and I couldn’t get enough of Anna Nicole. I fell under her spell. I did whatever she asked.”

But later, Smith’s use of drugs and careless disrespect cooled Soto’s ardor:

She kept saying she wanted me to use my ‘bow and arrow’ on her ‘ax wound.’ I told her that was no ax wound, it was the Grand Canyon!

If Soto prevails in court, he’s promised half to the Tohono O’odham Nation which would become the richest Indian nation in the southwestern United States.
