In Defense of Carlos de Abreu

For years and years, Movie City News founder David Poland and others have piled on Carlos de Abreu‘s annual Hollywood Film Awards. The very loosely juried late October celebration kicks off the auditorium portion of Hollywood film awards season following the film-festival triumvirate of Telluride, Venice and Toronto.

HollywoodFilmAwardsLogoIn light of today’s announcement that the event will be televised starting this fall in partnership with Dick Clark Productions, we would like to make a couple of humble suggestions. Firstly, we think now is the perfect time for de Abreu’s harshest critics to ratchet down the tiresome attacks a little.

Sites like Movie City News rely greatly on film awards season ad money. We’re not suggesting that Poland and his colleagues are in the habit of molding their coverage to fit that month’s banner advertisers or sponsors. But awards season bloggers, awards season event hosts, awards season studios… They’re all feeding at the same trough.

Pia Zadora is Once Again a Las Vegas Headliner

At no point was the reputation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lowlier than the time a certain rich Hollywood husband (Meshulam Riklis) greased the wheels of the organization’s membership to maximize the chances of his young actress wife (Pia Zadora) winning a Golden Globe. (She did.)

Per a a recent item by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke, lo these many years later, Zadora has moved to Vegas, married a cop and found a hankering for old standards. At a weekend Sin City charity event, the 58-year-old Hoboken, NJ native talked to Clarke about her upcoming July 27-28 Vegas performance at The Smith Center:

Zadora has put together a cabaret show featuring the standards that Frank Sinatra suggested for her when they worked at the Riviera. A year in the making, her show caught the eye of Myron Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center, while she was performing in San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko Rrazz Room.

Pia Zadora Set to Make Gaudy, Green Return

This Friday-Saturday, Landmark’s Regent Theater in Westwood will play host to midnight screenings of Santa’s Cool Holiday Film Festival. Along with a couple of Fleischer brother shorts, Ozzie and Harriet, Howdy Doody and vintage theater management greetings PSAs, there will also be a restored version of 1964′s Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

The festival moves on locally the following weekend to Baldwin Hills, Chino Hills and the Bridge complex, but for fans of the woman whose husband would go on to buy her a Golden Globe for another Christmas, this is a perfect way to get into the cheesy holiday spirit. From the official program notes:

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a baffling mixture of sci-fi, Christmas cheer and childish slapstick, all filmed in garish (or as the poster says, “Space-Blazing”) color.  And you’ll see how important that color is when you find out that Pia Zadora plays the entire role with a bright green face.
