Megan Liberman Named Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo! News

Yahoo! News has named Megan Liberman its editor-in-chief. Liberman was most recently deputy news editor of The New York Times. Liberman will be tasked with expanding Yahoo! News’ team and creating new features for the site.

Liberman was previously The New York Times Magazine’s deputy editor and first online editor. She also created the popular parenting blog, Motherlode.

“Megan is a dynamic addition to the Yahoo News team,” said Robertson Barrett, VP of Yahoo! News and Finance, in a statement. “As deputy news editor at The New York Times she drove some of the most successful digital initiatives, from its blog network to Nate Silver’s multi-platform presence to live streamed coverage of the 2012 elections. With that type of experience, she is a natural fit to lead editorial for the world’s largest news site, and she will help us take Yahoo News to the next level.”

Liberman’s appointment is effective immediately.

Yahoo News Expands Its Scope

Yahoo! News, traditionally known for its link aggregation and culling pieces from the AP wire, has slowly been expanding its original content in recent years. The site has a fairly robust blog presence  at this point, particularly in the political realm. Now, Yahoo News has decided to take things further and expand into documentary news. The site is producing a new weekly series called Remake America about six middle-class families trying to navigate America’s sagging, post-bubble economy.

“This puts us on a new track,” VP of Yahoo News and Finance Robertson Barrett tells AdWeek. “We’re looking to earn our return visitors.”

Barrett says in addition to the new series, Yahoo News will follow the model laid by Yahoo Sports–of enterprise reporting boosting by a roster of high-profile columnists. Former New York Times columnist Virginia Heffernan is apparently among the writers Yahoo will begin to trot out in the near future.
