Rodale Names Exec Director of Food Content and Strategy

Rodale has hired Melanie Hansche as executive director of food content and strategy, a new role at the company. Hansche comes to Rodale from a popular Australian food magazine, Donna Hay. She had been with Donna Hay since 2007, most recently serving as managing editor.

At Rodale, Hansche will be responsible for expanding the food content featured in Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Prevention, Runner’s World, Bicycling, and Organic Gardening. 

“Melanie’s enthusiasm for our brands and proven track record in the food space will enable us to leverage our food assets efficiently, effectively, and creatively across the company and develop new signature Rodale food properties for our audiences and advertisers,” said Rodale president, Scott Schulman, in a statement.

Hansche will report to Schulman.

Amy Keller Laird Named Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Health

unnamedAmy Keller Laird won the Rodale execs over. She was named interim editor-in-chief when Michele Promaulayko left for Yahoo — and there were rumors that Keller Laird wouldn’t be taking over the glossy — but that’s all over with. Rodale has tapped her as the new editor-in-chief of Women’s Health.

Rodale’s president, Scott Schulman, seemed to think Keller Laird was the perfect choice all along. ”Amy’s editorial expertise, passion for our mission, and proven ability to connect with a growing audience of readers across all channels make her the ideal candidate to continue Women’s Health’s incredible global growth trajectory,” he said in a statement.

Keller Laird joined Women’s Health in 2011 as executive editor. She previously served as Allure’s beauty director.

Bill Strickland Named EIC of Bicycling

bill strickland GRodale has named Bill Strickland editor-in-chief of Bicycling. Strickland has served as interim editor since Peter Flax left the magazine in April.

This is Strickland’s second stint as editor of Bicycling; he served as its top editor from 1999 to 2003.

“Bicycling is a terrific example of how an enthusiast brand can thrive in a changing media landscape,” said Rodale’s president, Scott Schulman, in a statement. “As an experienced, passionate cyclist, Bill will bring the brand’s multi-platform capabilities to an even wider readership and create more growth opportunities across digital, events, e-tailing, and other platforms.”

Strickland has been with Bicycling since 1991.

Scott Schulman Named President of Rodale

Scott Schulman GScott Schulman, a Dow Jones veteran, has been named the new president of Rodale. Schulman comes to Rodale from Dow Jones, where he had been since 1999. He most recently served as president of Dow Jones’ corporate markets group.

“Scott is the right president at the right time for our company,” said Maria Rodale, CEO of Rodale, in a statement. “He not only understands the business of digital content, but also is comfortable and adept at making the bold moves necessary to significantly drive revenue and profitability.”

Schulman will report to Rodale. His first day is October 28.

Dow Jones Restructures With New Business Groups, Promotions And Departures

Larsen announced that the company would be dividing up into five distinct business groups: The Wall Street Journal in print, The Wall Street Journal Digital Network, Dow Jones Financial Markets (including the newswires), Dow Jones Corporate Markets and Dow Jones Indexes. Kelly Leach, formerly the Journal‘s vice president for business management, has been appointed to lead the paper, while Gordon McLeod remains the president of its digital network. Joe Lanza, previously VP of sales and trading at Dow Jones, has been named the president of the Financial Markets group; Scott Schulman, president of Dow Jones Financial Information Services, is taking over the new Corporate Markets group and Mike Petronella will continue to lead the Dow Jones Indexes.

Other additions to the Dow Jones team include Dennis Cahill as senior VP for technology; Jennifer Jehn as senior VP for marketing; Lee Wood as senior VP for enterprise sales and client solutions; and Michael Rooney as CRO at the Journal, while others remain in their roles but are taking on additional responsibilities, like Ann Sarnoff, who will now be president of Dow Jones Ventures as well as senior VP for strategy. All this shuffling is certainly hard to keep track of.

But in the midst of all the good news four execs — Richard Hanks, who was former chief operating officer of the Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group; Bill Voltmer, senior vice president of global sales and client solutions at Dow Jones; Alan Scott, senior vice president and CMO of the Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group and Bruce Macfarlane — are leaving the company. Larsen added that, “they depart with our admiration and thanks.”
