David Perel Joins Bauer Media

David Perel is joining Bauer Media as the editorial director of In Touch and Life & Style. Perel comes to the company from Next Act Media, where he served as president since August of last year.

Before joining Next Act Media, Perel worked as AMI’s executive VP of digital content. He also served as editor of National Enquirer and Star.

“David is an extraordinary editor and we are thrilled to have someone of his caliber join the company, to continue our newsstand success,” said Sebastian Raatz, executive VPt of Bauer Publishing, in a statement. “His strong relationships in the entertainment industry as well as his success in developing digital platforms will be invaluable to our business efforts moving forward.”

In a related move, Dan Wakeford — who has been with Bauer since 2002 — is departing the company. Wakeford has served as editor-in-chief of In Touch and Life & Style since 2007.

Bauer also announced that Christopher Yates has been named Bauer Media VP digital for the Bauer Media Group.

Bauer Publishing Makes Changes

Bauer Publishing has named Jared Shapiro editorial director of news and entertainment for In Touch and Life & Style, a new role at the company. Shapiro has been with Bauer since 2005, most recently as executive editor of Life & Style. As editorial director, he will report to Dan Wakeford, editor-in-chief of the two magazines.

Bauer has also named Terri White executive editor of Life & Style. White was most recently editor-in-chief of Buzz, an entertainment  magazine published alongside Britain’s The Sun.

“The appointment of such strong talent to our executive editorial team reinforces the extraordinary quality that Bauer is known to deliver at the newsstand,” said Sebastian Raatz, executive vice president of Bauer Publishing. “The talent that we’ve positioned to lead these staffs will take Bauer’s entertainment group to the next level.”

Each move is effective immediately.

Bauer Welcomes ID To Their Magazine Lineup

In today’s Media Ink column, New York Post’s Keith Kelly discussed Bauer Media Group’s plan to roll out ID magazine later this year.  ID, which stands for Ideas and Discoveries, targets male readers interested in science, nature, and psychology.

Bauer has tapped VP of new media, Sebastian Raatz, as ID‘s launch editor and group publisher of Bauer’s women’s titles, Greg Slattery, will serve as the launch publisher.  Slattery said he is not concerned about potential advertising difficulties when releasing the new magazine:

“Bauer has had success in launching a variety of magazines in different economic times [...].”

The male-oriented ID deviates from the norm at Bauer.  The group currently manages Life & Style, In Touch, First for Women, and Women’s World – all publications geared toward the fairer sex.  ID is scheduled to debut on Dec. 10 and will roll out six issues per year at $4.99 a copy.
