Syracuse Students Say Yes to Dr. Who Class

DrWhoClassLogoEven though Professor Anthony Rotolo‘s Spring 2015 Dr. Who offering will not be an official class, that hasn’t stopped Syracuse University students from signing up. The fact that the course is free and comes with no homework may also have something to do with it.

Per a Facebook post from the instructor, he’s quickly raced past the number of actors who have played the titular part for the BBC:

More than 200 students have registered in just under two days! Many are Syracuse University students with majors ranging from communications and media to science, tech, film, history and education. Others are students at nearby colleges like Clarkson, SUNY Upstate Medical and Utica College. Others still are friends, alumni and members of the Syracuse area community.

KCPQ Will Pay More to Stay With Fox (TVSpy)
Tribune Media has signed an affiliation agreement with 21st Century Fox to keep Seattle’s KCPQ on as a Fox affiliate until July 2018. Deadline Hollywood Last month Fox said that it would withdraw its programming on Jan. 17. It wanted more lucrative terms from — or possibly to buy — the station in the home of the NFL’s 2014 Super Bowl champions. Tribune says that it will “pay additional programming fees to Fox for the primetime and sports content provided by the network” beginning in January. New York Post Tribune said that even with the stepped up fees, the station would deliver pretax profits in excess of last year’s $13 million. The new deal gives Fox a bigger cut of the revenue from Tribune’s carriage agreements with cable companies and other pay-TV providers. Station owners kick back some of their fees to the network. With the soaring cost of sports rights, the networks are leaning harder on their affiliates to recoup some of their programming costs. Variety During the dispute, Fox even went so far as to start the process of acquiring another station on the edges of the Seattle market to ramp up the pressure on Tribune to hand over KCPQ. The Fox O&O group orchestrated a similar station swap with Cox Media in the San Francisco market earlier this year. WSJ Fox, which paid for the broadcast rights to the NFL’s National Football Conference, had set out to own more television stations in markets where there is an NFC team, such as the Seattle Seahawks. Those stations tend to have high ratings, and by owning them outright rather than contracting with affiliate stations owned by other companies, Fox is able to collect more of the fees that pay-TV operators pay these local stations — not to mention local advertising dollars.

David Remnick is Syracuse University’s 160th Commencement Speaker

Over the years, a number of top-rank journalists have delivered the keynote at Syracuse University’s commencement. This group includes “First Lady of American Journalism” Dorothy Thompson Lewis (1937), Walter Cronkite (1968), Dan Rather (1984), Steve Kroft (1996) and Ted Koppel (2000).

On May 11 in the Carrier Dome, New Yorker EIC David Remnick will add his name to this list and receive as well an honorary degree. From the university announcement:

“As an author and journalist, David is one of the most insightful chroniclers of world events and the people who shape them,” says SU Chancellor and President Kent Syverud. “He excels at recognizing a great story and knowing how to tell it well, whether the subject is the fall of the Soviet Empire or the rise of Barack Obama.”

With Future Of Media Uncertain, Mirror Awards Honor Journalists Covering Media

mirrors.jpgToday’s Mirror Awards luncheon at the Harmonie Club uptown was swarmed by all manner of media types. Media critics who were nominated for Mirrors like Vanity Fair‘s Michael Wolff, Rachel Sklar of Abrams Research (nominated twice for her work for the Huffington Post) and The New York TimesDavid Carr (who won for best commentary in traditional media) mingled with colleagues and big name presenters, including Howard Dean and Nora Ephron.

The awards, which honor excellence in media reporting, were presented for the third year by Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. MSNBC anchor and Newhouse alum Contessa Brewer guided the festivities as emcee, and Chris Ahearn, president of Reuters Media, and Bloomberg political columnist Margaret Carlson presented awards.

Vanity Fair and The New York Times both took home two of the six prizes awarded by a jury of journalists and journalism educators. In addition to Carr, the TimesDavid Barstow won for best in-depth piece in traditional media. VF‘s Seth Mnookin and David Kamp each snagged an award for best single article, for traditional and digital media, respectively.

Rounding out the winners were Ian Parker for best profile, traditional media, for his profile of Times columnist Thomas Freidman for the New Yorker and Clive Thompson for Wired.com took home the award for best commentary in digital media.

A New Award On The Block

sidney.pngAdvertising Age‘s Simon Dumenco expressed his distaste for the Mirror Awards and Arianna Huffington earlier this week, but we think he would have a hard time finding fault in this new journalism award.

Starting in July, the Sidney Hillman Foundation will present “The Sidney,” an award honoring socially-conscious journalism, every month. The winner, which can be a magazine, newspaper, Web site, photo essay or any broadcast outlet, will win $500 and “a bottle of union-made wine,” the foundation said. Nominations can be submitted through the foundation’s Web site.

Meanwhile, the debate about Huffington’s legitimacy as the recipient of this year’s Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mirror Awards luncheon next week continues. Yesterday, Richard Prince interviewed Lorraine Branham, dean of the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, which presents the Mirror Awards, who stood by the school’s decision to honor Huffington.

“I spent 25 years in the newspaper business and I certainly believe journalists should be paid for their work,” Branham said, according to Prince’s online column Journal-isms. “But I am also a realist who can plainly see what is happening to the profession I know and love. It has changed and will continue to do so, and at a frightening pace…The old revenue model is in shambles and I don’t think we can lay the blame for this at the doorstep of the Huffington Post.”

Mirror Awards Take Heat For Honoring Huffington

mirror.pngAdvertising Age‘s Simon Dumenco is outraged that Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is awarding Arianna Huffington its Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award at next week’s Mirror Awards, and not just because AdAge has never won a Mirror prize. Dumenco is upset because, to him, Huffington represents all that is wrong in the world of journalism right now.

Dubbing Huffington’s Mirror Award the “Most Bitterly Ironic Media Award” in his column today, Dumenco said that the Newhouse school, which trains journalists, “should know better than to honor a woman who thinks journalists should work for free!”

Web Voters Award Sklar Two Mirror Award People’s Choice Prizes

mirror.pngFormer Huffington Post contributor Rachel Sklar nabbed two People’s Choice awards following online voting for Mirror Award nominees.

2009 marks the third year that Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications has presented its Mirror Awards, which honor media reporters. The finalists were first announced last month and members of the public and fellow journalists were asked to view each finalist’s work online and vote for a People’s Choice winner. The six winners of the online balloting were revealed today.

Sklar, who is current working for Abrams Research and The Daily Beast, won People’s Choice prizes for best commentary in digital media and best single article in digital media for her piece “The NYT‘s Selective, Misleading Pentagon Story.”

Other winners included Fast Company‘s Clive Thompson for best single article in traditional media, Mark Bowden of The Atlantic for best profile in traditional media and Broadcasting & Cable‘s Ben Grossman for best commentary in traditional media.

The real Mirror Award winners, selected by a jury of journalists and journalism educators, will be announced at a luncheon on June 9. Sklar’s former boss, Arianna Huffington, is also being honored with the Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Obama for America New Media Department/Blue State Digital will be receiving the i-3 award for impact, innovation and influence.
