Jimmy Fallon Helps Move the Tentpole to Manhattan

ShutterstockMichaelBayWhen Paramount rolls out the red carpet June 25 for its latest Transformers sequel, a sideline transformation will also be on display. Instead of Westwood, CA, Michael Bay and co. will be tub-thumping in front of a New York marquee.

According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Pamela McClintock, Transformers: Age of Extinction is one of a number of 2014 Hollywood tentpoles to notably premiere in NYC rather than LA. This is due, she writes, to the rise of fly-backs by stars from far-away international destinations and… Jimmy Fallon:

“We are probably doing double the number of premieres in New York than we did three or four years ago,” says Craig Waldman, founder of events production company 15/40

A Thank You Note for Jimmy Fallon

Thank you… for making The Tonight Show monologue your own.

JimmyFallonPic

Three months ago, when you took over the NBC late night franchise, many wondered how you would deal with the heavy burden of following the Jay Leno and Johnny Carson monologue format. The solution, as you have shown, was to sidestep their version of the news in favor of a broader, goofier and slightly shorter rundown.

Your populist approach begins each night with the refrain, “Here’s what people are talking about.” Cleverly, that leads you to talk about everything under the one-liner sun. Not just politicians, pundits and Presidents but also YouTube videos, last night’s TV programs and more. It’s an approach that basically combines the best of Leno and Kimmel.

RelishMIXLogoForget Nielsen. The company that matters when it comes to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is the one called RelishMIX.

Per a report by AP television writer David Bauder, Fallon is not just topping the other Jimmy in traditional metrics, but also in the all-important social media counted sphere:

During his first month, Fallon generated more than 120 million YouTube views, Twitter mentions and Facebook posts, the research firm RelishMIX said. That’s more than double Kimmel, who had 57 million in the same social media metric. Letterman had 2.3 million.

Fallon, Higgins Mine Monologue Gold from Drop-In Imaginary Friends

It’s turning out to be one of the great pleasures of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The insertion by Fallon into most every monologue of a recurring comedic-character impression. These imaginary friends are used as a punchline for subsequent monologue gags and also riffed on with deft expertise from the lectern by announcer Steve Higgins.

During one recent monologue for example, Fallon and Higgins triangulated around a big box electronics store wise guy. The sort of salesman who is aghast at anyone opting for medium-size flat screens, lower-end cable TV trappings and who reminds throughout his sales pitch that he’s got that Frozen sing-along Disney smash “right here!” On another occasion, Fallon and Higgins had tons of monologue fun with the idea of some cuckolded senior citizens reported to have left a measly seven-cent tip for their restaurant server.

Sometimes, the monologue “third man” is famous, like Vladimir Putin. In each monologue case, the wonderful rapport of Fallon and Higgins and the playful tone of their shared imitation helps cement the phantom sidekicks deal.

Jerry Seinfeld Offers Up Classic Description of the Smartphone Scroll

There was some very solid Seinfeld last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The king of the observational world kicked off his stand-up routine with a look at the ubiquitous Smartphone.

Seinfeld’s mockery of a user always needing to be in touch with their friends was fantastic, especially his description and pantomime of the bottom-to-top scroll through a list of friend names. “Really? They don’t seem very important. Not the way you scroll through their names and your contact list like a gay French king. ‘Who pleases me today… Who shall I favor?… Who shall I delete?’…”
