Loyola Marymount Finally Adds a Journalism Minor

It took Loyola Marymount University English professor Linda Bannister roughly ten years. But beginning next spring semester, the fruits of her labor will finally be on the school’s curriculum: the option for students of a journalism minor.

Up until now, LMU has offered only a Journalism Certificate. The minor will come in especially handy for students planning to apply to graduate journalism school and has been designed to also serve the university’s social justice mission. From the school’s recent announcement:

According to Bannister, the minor will require 21 units including four required courses: “The Language of Journalism” (or “Writing for Journalism”), “Journalism: New Media,” one course in community journalism or specialized journalism and one 400-level Capstone course with backpack journalism and long-form focus.

Left, Right & Center‘s Tony Blankley Dies at 63

Conservative commentator Tony Blankley passed away over the weekend due to complications from stomach cancer. He was 63. Blankley had a regular spot as the conservative voice on KCRW’s Left, Right & Center. Blankley was Newt Gingrich‘s press secretary in the early 90′s. He also spent 10 years in the California attorney general’s office as a prosecutor.

LA Observed spoke with several of Blankley’s KCRW collegues about his passing. Here’s what Left, Right & Center colleague Arianna Huffington had to say.

“I have been friends with Tony and his wonderful wife Lynda ever since we first met in Washington in 1993 and it was a real delight to have him join our Left, Right and Center team every week. He never failed to amaze me with his breadth of knowledge and culture, always unpredictable with his trademark wit and tailored suits. His resilience through his battle with cancer inspired us all. He was a true original and will be deeply missed.

HuffPo at the RNC: Noonan Says, “It’s an Awkward Moment in Media.” Tucker Says, “Commenters are Bad for America.”

100_3154.jpgThe HuffPo brunch today was easily the best panel we’ve attended in the last two weeks. It was a decidedly smaller affair than the one last week in Denver, at least as far as the audience size is concerned (guesstimating 100 people to the more than three hundred at the DNC). It again featured a large panel (Tony Blankley, Arianna Huffington, Laura Ingraham, David Kralik, Cyrus Krohn, Frank Luntz, Peggy Noonan, Rep. John Shadegg), and moderators Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinsk did an excellent job of keeping up the pace. We’d do a comprehensive write-up for you, but one of the beauties of Twitter is that it’s already been done for us! Between FishbowlDC, Ana Marie Cox, and Rachel Sklar you’ll feel as though you were actually there. We do think it bears mentioning that thus far familiar “right wing” media faces are far more engaging and inclusive than we might have suspected (Laura Ingraham and Bill Kristol we’re looking at you). Some pics after the jump.
