Veranda Names New Editor

Clinton Smith has been named editor-in-chief of Veranda. Smith has been the editorial director of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles since 2008.

“Clint has devoted his career to covering style, design and decoration, and there is no one better qualified to take the helm of Veranda,” said Newell Turner, editorial director of the Hearst Design Group, in a statement. “His strong relationships with designers and manufacturers are a tremendous asset, and his passion for great design will inspire readers of every issue.”

Smith will report to Turner and David Carey, president of Hearst Magazines. He starts September 3.

Katie Brockman Named Associate Publisher of Veranda

Katie Brockman has been promoted from advertising director to associate publisher of Veranda. Brockman has been with Veranda since 2002; advertising director since 2010. Prior to her time at Veranda, Brockman was a sales associate at Self.

Veranda is on fire and has firmly staked its place in the luxury lifestyle category,” said Kate Kelly Smith, senior vice president, publishing director, Hearst Design Group, in a statement. “Brockman has been the lynchpin of Veranda’s unprecedented growth and I can’t think of a better partner to join me in continuing to grow the brand.”

Brockman’s appointment is effective immediately and she will report to Kelly Smith.

Hearst Combines Editorial Structure of Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Veranda

Hearst Magazines is combing the editorial structure of Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Veranda and putting them all under the wing of Newell Turner. Turner is now the editor-in-chief of the newly created Hearst Design Group, which includes the three titles and their digital counterparts. Turner had been editor of House Beautiful since 2010.

Michael Boodro and Dara Caponigro will remain editors-in-chief of Elle Decor and Veranda, respectively, but the Design Group will share market and copy editors between them all.

David Carey, CEO of Hearst, praised the restructuring as a “fresh new approach,” while Turner added that by launching the Design Group, Hearst is “really changing how branded content is created.”

Rolling Stone‘s Obama Cover Wins ASME Prize

rolling stone obama.jpgToday we’re at the Magazine Publishers of America‘s Magazine Innovation Summit, where ASME President David Willey just announced the winners of its best cover of the year contest in 10 categories.

The overall winner this year was Rolling Stone, which also won for the Best Obama cover category. Other category winners included Bon Appetit, Elle, Audubon, Sports Illustrated, Vanity Fair, Veranda, Harper’s Bazaar, Condé Nast Traveler and New York magazine.
