KCET’s SoCal Connected Wins duPont Award

What a way to end the year. After scoring a George Foster Peabody Award in June, KCET’s weekly newsmagazine SoCal Connected has landed the equally prestigious broadcast journalism honor of an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.

Among the program’s cited reports were a trio about LA’s marijuana mess. “Up in Smoke” looked at legal loopholes being exploited by dispensaries; “Cannabis Cowboys” followed federal agents sniffing out Mexican drug cartel weed patches in California parklands; and “The Doctor is In” proved just how easy it was for LA Times columnist Steve Lopez to get a medical marijuana prescription filled.

As Promised, Vince Gonzales Getting Ripped on Camera

Here’s the second season debut of SoCal Connected. It’s a chilling experiment – with cocktails – about driving while distracted. Plus Vince Gonzales, a local journo getting drunk on the job and admitting to it. Total switch.

Posted after the jump is the next segment by Angie Crouch about driving while talking on your phone. CHP officer Ricardo Quintero is featured in a ride along. How come we never get pulled over by anything that looks like that?! We think FBLA needs to do a ride along…for an investigation.

Our perfect day at the office starts this way: There are multiple YouTube clips in our inbox of local journos throwing back shots while reporting.

SoCal Connected’s Vince Gonzales did a story about the effects of texting while driving as compared to drinking while driving. He replicated the experiment by Car and Driver magazine on camera. And because he is a true professional, he got sauced for the sake of the piece.

The story is airing this Thursday.

Now we are no teetotalers. We’re whatever is the opposite of that – booze pushers. Enthusiasts. So we’re not knocking on anyone for sipping screwdrivers on the clock. Just so that’s clear. If anything we’d like to see more of this behavior. We’ll even buy.

What we really want are the outtakes. Hint hint.

KCET Wins Two Golden Mike Awards

Golden Mike award.pngWe are very excited to announce that our little local TV program, SoCal Connected has won two Golden Mike Awards. We like any news that has nothing to do with people losing their homes, jobs, minds (Rob Blagojevich that’s aimed at you and your aluminum hat).

Anyway, SoCal Connected Executive Producer Bret Marcus used to work on “The News with Brian Williams” on MSNBC for all you stalkers out there.

KCET’s SoCal Connected, which launched
on-air and online in September 2008, this weekend won two Golden Mike Awards for Best News Public Affairs Program and for Best Original News Commentary.

The rest of the release after the jump.
