Nightline Pays a Visit to BuzzFeed Video HQ

In lieu of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, think of BuzzFeed’s Los Angeles office on Beverly Blvd. as the equivalent of Ze Frank and the Viral Factory. Into which, for Nightline, dropped Nick Watt.

In addition to executive VP of video Frank [first name pronounced ZAY], other BuzzFeed staffers featured in the piece include video fellow Keith Habersberger, senior video producer Jeff Rubin and junior video producer Andrew Ilnyckyj. All possessors of what the ABC reporter deems to be “Sissyphian minds,” constantly looking to take intelligent risks in pursuit of one-million-plus-views vids.

Jonah Peretti, Studio Mogul?

That’s how the BuzzFeed founder may soon be viewed on the west coast and beyond, per his recent conversation with LA Times reporter Andrea Chang. The company recently moved its west coast office to a new location on Beverly Blvd. and also leases production space nearby.

Peretti notes that Psy‘s mega-popularity came from that video’s “shareability,” and says video is a big missing piece of BuzzFeed:

The LA team, he said, is building the “TV studio and movie studio of the future” by creating original videos to fit these new patterns of media consumption…

BuzzFeed LA Launch Party at Mondrian’s Skybar

FishbowlLA braved the harsh L.A. drizzle on Thursday night to hit Skybar, where BuzzFeed staffers and friends were celebrating the launch of the website’s new Los Angeles bureau. Top BuzzFeed brass was in attendance: CEO and founder Jonah Peretti, president Jon Steinberg, editor-in-chief Ben Smith, executive VP of video Ze Frank, and probably more we didn’t recognize.

We spotted Nate Silver in the crowd, as well as Julia Boorstin of CNBC, comedian Chelsea PerettiLA Times VP of Communications Nancy Sullivan and former Good magazine editor Ann Friedman, who tolerated some gushing on our behalf over her delightful Tumblr and column, #Real Talk.

But we don’t have pictures of any of these lovely people, because we forgot our camera. We only managed this one grainy cell phone picture before giving up and hitting the open bar:

That’s Ann-Marie Thomson of SYCO television, Grantland editor Emily Yoshida and BuzzFeed’s Los Angeles bureau chief Richard Rushfield being blinded by my cell phone camera.

Richard Rushfield to Head New BuzzFeed LA Bureau

BuzzFeed is expanding its reach to Hollywood with a well-stocked Los Angeles bureau. Richard Rushfield, former entertainment editor for LATimes.com and west coast editor of Gawker, will sit at the helm. Kate Aurthur, former LA Times TV editor and west coast editor of Newsweek/The Daily Beast, will serve as chief L.A. correspondent. Buzzfeed reporter Michael Hastings will serve as a correspondent-at-large.

More from The Hollywood Reporter:

Rushfield says the plan is to combine viral-ready takes on big entertainment moments with serious reporting that will rival traditional outlets. The L.A. bureau will have about 12 editorial employees and be home to BuzzFeed Video, the site’s video team focused on viral content and led by Ze Frank.

Rushfield will begin at Buzzfeed on October 29. Aurthur will join him November 5, and Hastings will begin contributing stories in early 2013.

LA’s Wacky Ze Frank Joins BuzzFeed

Looks like our former Mediabistro colleague Andrew Gauthier (TV Spy) has some capable new company at BuzzFeed with regards to cranking out memorable video material.

A month after Gauthier joined the company to help oversee video production, BuzzFeed has announced the hire of LA video blogger extraordinaire Ze Frank (pictured). From today’s release:

With BuzzFeed’s acquisition of Ze Frank Games, Frank will build a team of video producers in Los Angeles and establish a studio to create content native to the social web. The acquisition and hire are effective immediately.

“I’ve been a longtime fan of the way that BuzzFeed creates and curates great social content, so it’s a thrill to join them. There is a great opportunity to bring BuzzFeed’s philosophy to the wild west of online video and I’m excited to be putting together a talented team in LA to make that happen,” said Frank.
