The Media Wonders Why Terms Like ‘She-Devil’ Make People Think It’s Sexist

FE_PR_070905HillaryNutcracker.jpgEverybody wants to talk about Sex(ism). Our favorite Caucuser Kit Seelye has a piece up today at the NYT about how the media and its critics are split over whether or not the coverage of the Democratic Presidential campaign was sexist. The critics say absolutely, the media (with some noted exceptions including Katie Couric) says it’s all in your head. Says Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University:

I have not had a lot of regretful conversations with high-ranking media types and political reporters about how unfair their coverage of the Hillary Clinton campaign was.
Yeah, regret is definitely not a word one would apply to “whipping boyKeith Olbermann. Anyway, there’s some speculation in the article that the criticism mostly applies to the periphery of the campaign coverage, you know cable and the internet, though they do concede that “while it was limited, it was limited to influential people.” Of course, it’s all relative.
Starting in mid-December, 90 percent of comments about Mr. Obama on the three broadcast networks were positive, and 61 percent about Mrs. Clinton were positive, according to a study.
One supposes we’ll just have to wait and see how the media deals with terrorist fist-jabbing, baby-mama Michelle Obama.
