Last night, FishbowlLA had the pleasure of sharing a dinner date at the Highlands Hollywood with Tourism Toronto, in town to remind an audience of local journalists that Hogtown is not just the home of North America’s finest film festival. It’s also, according to VP of Communications Andrew Weir, a place where the rate of condo construction is currently twice that of New York City and three times that of Vancouver.
Taking to the stage before a meal of sushi, lamb and chocolate mousse was Toronto chef Guy Rubino (pictured). In addition to co-hosting the Food Network Canada show Made to Order and operating Toronto restaurant Ame with his brother Michael (also present), Rubino is the lead singer and guitarist of his own recently formed band BMD.
Rubino blasted out a nice little set of rock and roll alongside bandmates Guy, Grant and Dawn. This weekend, he will be back at Ame for a December 13th musical performance to benefit the Cabbagetown Community Arts Center.
In talking about the wines that were served last night, older brother Michael pointed out that the Niagara region of Ontario is at the same latitude as France’s famed Beaujolais area. By sheer coincidence, the journalist sitting next to FBLA – International Herald Tribune and Huffington Post contributor Andrea Vaucher – was previously married to a Frenchman with a vineyard in Bordeaux.
