WNBC Marks Earth Week with Event in Harlem

In conjunction with Green is Universal Earth Week, WNBC joined its new parent company for the Comcast Cares celebration. WNBC president and general manager, Michael Jack was among the volunteers at the New York City Housing Authority’s Manhattanville Houses in Harlem.

At Friday’s half-day project, WNBC helped to revitalize and renovate the houses, led by George Oliphant, host of LX-produced George to the Rescue, seen on Channel 4 weekends.

Oliphant worked with his production team and more than 150 Comcast and NBCUniversal volunteers. City Year New York is leading the work that includes building wooden beds for organic vegetables and flowers, constructing benches, removing concrete, and painting murals.

“We are truly delighted to be a part of this initiative as it allows us to make direct contributions to the communities in which Comcast and NBCUniversal employees work and live,” Jack said. “It also marks the first time NBCUniversal will be participating in Comcast’s long-standing tradition of Comcast Cares Day.”

The Manhattanville Houses are located at 129 – 133rd Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

“Harlem has always been the green jewel in the crown of Manhattan,” said Assemblyman Keith Wright of Harlem, Chairman of the New York State Assembly Subcommittee on Public Housing.  “By revitalizing the aged infrastructure at the Manhattanville Houses and providing our residents with a beautiful new urban landscape, we ensure that our green tradition will live on. I am so happy to join Comcast and NBC Universal as they give back to the community of Harlem.”
