Writing Samples: Arts & Culture

The "Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations" exhibition, organized into seven categories, explores communications that might have happened (but didn't) between two Italian fashion designers from different eras: Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.
Today, most of us are familiar with "The New Colossus," the poem inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty, but we still do not know much about its author, Emma Lazarus.
Taryn is a New York based photographer who is known for incorporating text with photographs. "A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters" is the culmination of Taryn's world travels and research from 2008-2011.
MoMA's "Inventing Abstraction 1910-1925" exhibit includes a white painting that makes me think of Yasmina Reza's play "Art." It's Kazimir Malevich's "Suprematist composition: White on White." When I saw it I laughed and imagined two friends arguing about its merit, just like in the play.
An account of my visit to the Schubert Club Museum located in Rice Park in St. Paul, MN., and a look at how music clubs originated in the U.S.
In which I extricate myself from my daily routine to go on a field trip to the Upper East Side to learn more about Edith Wharton and visit The New York Society Library's lovely historical building.
"Materializing Six Years" is not a primarily visual exhibit, but is rather designed to present conceptual artists' ideas in the context of the anti-establishment sentiment prevalent in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Conceptual art is considered the precursor to graphic design.

Writing Samples: Sheet Music History

A preview of early music notation from Asia, Middle East and Europe dating back hundreds of years.
The evolution of western music notation
Musical notation, or sheet music, serves many functions. Composers use notation during their creation process to try out musical ideas. Notation helps conductors, performers and musicians remember pieces and it is a useful tool for the study and analysis of music.

Writing Samples: Women's History Month

If you haven't heard of author and fashion designer Elizabeth Hawes, it's probably because she was blacklisted for her allegedly "Communist" work with American labor unions.
Known as the patron saint of the environmental movement, Rachel was a marine biologist and writer who had written three bestselling novels about the ocean by the time Silent Spring was published in 1962.
It is curious that Fanny Fern is not very widely known today, considering her extraordinary accomplishments as the first woman newspaper columnist, and the highest paid 19th century American newspaper writer.

Writing Samples: Women's Issues and History

This spring, the three-part miniseries "The Bletchley Circle" aired on PBS. Set in England in 1951, the show imagines what it might have been like for four former female code breakers to return to their daily routines after World War II.
More than 20 years ago, the Tailhook scandal exposed the problem of sexual assault in the military, specifically within the Navy. A Pentagon report at the time found that 90 people had been assaulted, but no one was criminally prosecuted.

Writing Samples: Content Marketing

As users turn to the web for travel research and bookings, hotels have found a way to maximize the brand-consumer relationship- offering useful content experiences in the form of mobile applications, digital magazines and web-based expert advice.

Writing Samples: Interviews with Musicians

Yaron Herman is a charismatic and passionate pianist and composer whose youth belies amazing talent and experience. He has performed more than 100 concerts in 30 different countries at venues.
From Radiohead to Mozart, this group of talented, diverse musicians has changed the perception of chamber music performance.

Writing Samples: Social Media

This is the last of a three-part series on the Corporate Social Media conference in New York. Highlights of Days 1 and 2 are summarized in my first two posts, and this one is a review of social media software available to companies.
I had the good fortune to interview digital communications consultant Shel Holtz on the topic of Enterprise Social Media. The transcript of our conversation yielded a series of blog posts.
The social media landscape is a rapidly shifting entity with frequent entries by new platforms. These contenders occasionally dethrone yesterday's pack leaders. Branch and Vine are two new platforms reviewed in this post.

Writing Samples: Career Matters and Entrepreneurship

While estimates about the number of freelancers vary, a 2010 Census Bureau Survey puts the percentage of American workers who work exclusively from home at 6.6%, an increase of 37 percent between 1997 and 2010. Co-shared workspaces have also proliferated.

Writing Samples: Music Education

As social media strategist, I grew The Melody Book's Twitter following to around 1,000, creating relationships with parents of special needs children. One of these parents reached out to us on Twitter and was the subject of this inÂ?-depth interview and blog post.
A roundup of summer and outdoor fun activities in New York City. Rainy days and vacations notwithstanding, there are myriad ways to entertain children and find wonderful (and often free) outdoor family events all over the city.
Music education in the last 100 years and the cultural, technology and world events that affected it. The advent of school bands and orchestra, various training programs and the use of iPads in the classroom.
