Other Work History
After one year and two awards, I left my position as a staff writer with my community newspaper to focus on magazine work. I am currently a contributing writer for Madison Magazine and freelance for many other magazines and newspapers. I also continue to maintain 5-7 clients for an advertising magazine (interview, design, write copy, proof, print, mail). In 2009 I founded ViolenceUnSilenced.com, which I incorporated as a non-profit in 2011.

Other
In 2008 I wrote a city magazine feature profiling seven survivors of domestic violence, and was profoundly changed by the experience. To pay it forward, I founded the website Violence UnSilenced in 2009 with the intention of eradicating the silence surrounding domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape by giving survivors a public voice. Readers submit their personal stories of abuse and I post two each week. The readership is very supportive and I work hard to keep the space safe. I believe people are inherently empathetic but we seem to care more about general issues when we personally know those affected by them. I believe when we read the hard experiences of our loved ones on Violence UnSilenced, we take more ownership in the epidemic of abuse that belongs to all of us. I also believe that perpetrators rely on silence and shame as weapons and that for survivors, speaking out is both cathartic and empowering. I value community, compassion, service and truth.
