Sixteen year old Cameron is just trying to get through high school with as little effort as possible. But life just got a little bit harder for him when he learns that he is terminally ill.

Searching for Whitopia by Rich Benjamin

Searching for Whitopia by Rich Benjamin is today’s Featured Book of Color. Journalist Rich Benjamin spent two years living in the middle of white America to observe “Whitopias,” or predominantly white locales in the United States to reveal what these places are really like. Benjamin believes that by 2042 whites will no longer be the majority in America, which means that more immigrants and ethnicities will have moved into this country.

Through his research, Benjamin discovers that segregation is still a serious issue today and he explores and exposes his findings within Seaching for Whitopia. According to Benjamin there are two different Americas, “Obama Nation” and “Whitopia.” The first is comfortable with diversity even though they are clearly separated, while the other doesn’t mind a bit of culture so long as it doesn’t seep into their own communities.

Today’s Featured Book of Color is A Matter of Trust by Anne Schraff. Part of the Bluford High series, A Matter of Trust follows Darcy Wills who is trying to deal with changing friends, a new boyfriend, school, and jealousy. Darcy used to be best friends with Brisana Meeks, but now that they are at Bluford High they are bitter enemies because Darcy befriended the “zeros.”

Darcy tries to ignore the constant teasing from Brisana and tries to enjoy her new friends and boyfriend, Hakeem. But when she learns that Brisana has her eyes on her man, this would be the biggest betrayal yet. Darcy knows she needs to do something to put a stop to it, but she just doesn’t know what that should be.

When Heart Turns Rock Solid is an anthropological look at three Puerto Rican brothers, Fausto, Sammy, and Julio and their experiences with drugs, work, school, family and prison. Black writes about the experienced he gained studying these men for eighteen years from Springfield, Mass. He gained the trust of the Puerto Rican community and is able to give an interesting perspective on this group of people.
