Scene @ Career and Corporate Cool Launch

Rachel Weingarten (left) was a makeup artist before she joined the corporate world, and now that she’s a career and style consultant, she says the basic principles can be very similar. “I didn’t want to just cover people’s faces with stuff,” she explained as we chatted during the launch party for her new book, Career and Corporate Cool, at the Nokia store on 57th Street Wednesday night. “I wanted to apply just enough to make people feel beautiful.” It took a while, and several different career paths, for her to find a niche as head of the GTK Marketing Group: “I’m not sure if I didn’t like the corporate world,” she reflected, “or it didn’t like me. But now I’ve found a way to distinguish myself.” Wiley staffers braved the dysfunctional public transit system, still in disarray after the morning’s thunderstorms, to mark the publication of the career guide, as Weingarten encouraged guests to enter the raffle to win a handbag or a Bluetooth headset like the one she was wearing on her necklace.

Shortly after Weingarten introduced me to David Farley and Jessie Sholl, I realized that they were the couple that had sent me a photo of their pinscher/chihuahua, Abraham Lincoln, late last week, but it wasn’t until we got into serious conversational mode that I also discovered that they were the couple from this week’s Modern Love column.
