Donna Tartt Wins The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

pulitzerAuthor Donna Tartt has won The Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her book The Goldfinch. The novel about an orphan, also won Amazon’s Best Books of the Month “Spotlight Pick” in October 2013 and was shortlisted for 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award.

The Flick by Annie Baker won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Alan Taylor‘s The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832 won the prize for History. Megan Marshall‘s Margaret Fuller: A New American Life took the Pulitzer for the Biography category. Vijay Seshadri won the Poetry prize for 3 Sections.

Dan Fagin‘s Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation won the prize for General Nonfiction. John Luther Adams‘ Become Ocean took the prize for Music.

George Washington Book Prize Finalists Revealed

washingtonbookprizeAndrew Jackson O’ShaughnessyJeffrey L. Pasley and Alan Taylor are finalists for Washington College’s 10th annual George Washington Book Prize, which carries a $50,000 award.

O’Shaughnessy was nominated for The Men Who Lost America: British Leadership, the American Revolution, and the Fate of the Empire; Pasley for for The First Presidential Contest: 1796 and the Founding of American Democracy; and Taylor for The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on May 20th at Mount Vernon. Here is more about the judging from the organization’s website: “A jury of three distinguished historians, chaired by Gordon S. Wood and joined by Joyce Appleby and Annette Gordon-Reed, selected the finalists from among forty books published in the past year.”

New ‘Thor: The Dark World’ Trailer Released

Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor in the new trailer for Thor: The Dark World. The cast for the blockbuster comic book adaptation includes Natalie PortmanTom HiddlestonStellan SkarsgardIdris Elba and Anthony Hopkins.

Alan Taylor directed the film, a filmmaker who also directed six episodes of Game of Thrones for HBO. Here’s more about the movie, released October 30th:
