Book Promotion Advice for the Digital Age

ebooksummit23.jpgWhat can writers do to promote their work in the digital age? Rob Macdonald from Scribd, Scott Weisenthal from Off the Bookshelf, Nina Lassam from Wattpad, and Debbie Stier shared their thoughts during a book promotion panel at our eBook Summit last week.

Lassam shared the example of novelist Diana Ilinca. The author will publish Zirconya: The Sage of Aluh’Nehn in June, but Ilinca developed a side story from the novel on Wattpad. After interacting with her readers every week, Ilinca built a fan base for her upcoming novel.

Stier suggested that people pay more attention to mobile devices. She highlighted Foursquare’s use of coupons and how food trucks use Twitter to announce their locations. Stier predicted that writers, especially those in nonfiction, can capitalize on similar techniques.

HarperCollins’ Debbie Stier on the Stigma of Self-Publishing

Self-published authors have long been stigmatized for writing and selling their own books, but digital publishing is changing the game — and the industry’s perception. In a talk at the upcoming Mediabistro Circus, HarperCollins SVP and associate publisher Debbie Stier will discuss how digital trends are affecting publishing, from book acquisitions to marketing. Writer Jennifer Pullinger asked Stier: Because would-be authors can amass influence more easily through online and social media today, and the barriers to entry like economics and distribution are not as insurmountable as before, is that stigma fading faster, or will they always be two steps behind the established publishing houses?

“The barriers to entry for a writer to publish a book are lower than ever, and as a result, there are more self-published books than ever before. However, I think there’s still a stigma attached (whether justified or not) and that an established publisher still represents quality control. The fact of the matter is that the Internet is the ultimate tool for allowing the cream to rise, and I do believe that this will ultimately lead to the stigma diminishing. I don’t think we are there yet, but we are well on our way.”

Mediabistro Circus Will Feature Two Publishing Leaders

mbcircus.pngOn May 20 at 92YTribeca in New York, Mediabistro Circus will feature two publishing leaders–part of a one-day conference focused on women in media and technology.

The program is entitled Visionaries and Provocateurs, and will feature Blurb CEO Eileen Gittins and HarperCollins associate publisher Debbie Stier.

Gittins will talk about “the passion that drove her to start Blurb, and thoughts on the impact that self publishing can have on authors, writers, and the publishing industry.” Stier will focus on “how [digital trends are] changing the way we communicate, and how it all applies to book publishing.”

HarperStudio Imprint to Close; Staff Moves to Other Imprints

harperStudioHeader.jpgToday HarperCollins announced that HarperStudio will close, ending one of publishing’s most experimental projects. The final titles will be published in the Summer 2010 list.

Titles scheduled beyond that date will be picked up by other HarperCollins imprints. According to a memo from from Michael Morrison–the company’s president and publisher of U.S. General Books and Canada–the publisher is willing to discuss “profit sharing scenarios on a book by book basis” with authors who appreciated HarperStudio’s unorthodox publishing strategy. The imprint’s publisher left last month, making the imprint’s future uncertain. Last month, Gawker wondered what the change could mean for bloggers with book deals.

Here’s more from the memo: “I’m happy to report that Debbie Stier, Associate Publisher of HarperStudio and Director of Digital Marketing for HarperCollins, will continue in her role as Director of Digital Marketing for the company reporting to Carolyn Pittis. Debbie will also continue to acquire books for all imprints as Editor-at-Large. Kathryn Ratcliffe-Lee will continue to report to Debbie. I’m pleased to announce that Senior Editor Julia Cheiffetz will move to the Harper imprint and report to Jonathan Burnham. Assistant Editor Katie Salisbury will continue to report to Julia. Jessica Wiener will continue as Director of Marketing, reporting to me.”

HarperStudio Still Working on “A Plan for Going Forward”

harperStudioHeader.jpgLast week HarperStudio publisher Bob Miller announced that he will leave HarperStudio to serve as Group Publisher at Workman Publishing.

In the interim, HarperStudio associate publisher Debbie Stier created a Formspring.me page to answer questions from readers. The feed has remained active this week, fielding questions about the imprint, the future, and publishing in general.

Most recently, one reader asked: “Is Harper Studio still accepting proposals &/or MSS through 2010, or is everything on hold?” Stier replied: “Feel free to submit to Julia Cheiffetz, but it’s probably safe to assume that we won’t make any decisions until after we make a plan for going forward.”

HarperStudio Ponders Future After Bob Miller

harperStudioHeader.jpgAs dramatic staffing news rocked HarperStudio today, staffers opened an online dialogue with readers about the future of the HarperCollins imprint.

HarperStudio publisher Bob Miller is leaving to serve as Group Publisher at Workman Publishing and HarperCollins’ and U.S. publisher Michael Morrison will lead HarperStudio when Miller departs in May. HarperStudio created a Formspring.me page to field questions from readers. One person asked the looming question: “Will you be canceling contracts or will all books that have been signed up be published?”

This answer was posted: “No contracts canceled. Books that are on the schedule through Fall 2010 will be HarperStudio titles — and after that we’re going to put our heads together and figure out what where when how for the rest. Maybe HarperStudio 2.0. Maybe something different. I have no idea, but I feel like the world is our oyster. I LOVE our authors (all of them) and can’t wait to work on their books — and the mojo goes where we go. To be continued, for sure.”

SXSW Panelists on Publishing’s Brave New Future

sxsw.jpgFollowing last year’s controversial “New Think for Old Publishers” panel discussion at the South by Southwest festival, five publishing experts tried to host a more productive panel at this year’s event.

Today’s “A Brave New Future for Book Publishing” featured: Booksquare.com’s Kassia Krozser, BookTour.com’s Kevin Smokler, HarperStudio’s Debbie Stier, Tor.com’s Pablo Defendini, and Vook’s Matthew Cavnar. This GalleyCat editor is stuck behind a desk in NYC, but we collected the most procative Tweets from the interactive audience in Austin.

Marketing Staff Changes at HarperStudio

sarahburningham23.jpgToday HarperStudio announced that associate marketing director Sarah Burningham is leaving. In addition, the imprint will hire publishing veteran Jessica Wiener as their new marketing director.

According to the post, Burningham has left to support her second book, “Boyology.” She is also launching a boutique public relations and marketing firm called Little Bird Publicity. Wiener worked at Hyperion Books, promoting books with Mitch Albom, Randy Pausch, and Candace Bushnell. She will start in September.

HarperStudio associate publisher had these thoughts Debbie Stier, from the post: “I have to say, as someone who’s been in publishing for quite a long time, Sarah’s got the magic: the books are great (and as I always say, it goes back to the book); she’s got a great hook (self-help books for teenage girls by a young woman who’s old enough for the Mom’s to feel comfortable with and young enough for the girls to identify with and look up to); and she lights up like a lantern when the camera turns on. From the moment I saw Sarah do her first television interview, I knew the days of her working in house were numbered.”

HarperStudio’s Debbie Stier at DailyLit Lunch

dailylit.jpgThe minds behind DailyLit just launched the Digital Publishing Group (DPG), a gathering intended to help publishing types use digital tools more effectively.

The first DPG event is a brown bag lunch tomorrow (May 6th) at the Random House offices which is co-sponsored by the Book Industry Study Group. At the lunch, Debbie Stier, associate publisher of HarperStudio and director of digital marketing at HarperCollins, will talk about the future of the publishing industry.
