DreamWorks Picks Up Film Rights to Doris Kearns Goodwin’s New Biography

bullyDreamWorks has snatched up the film rights to The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, & the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Simon & Schuster will release the 928-page tome on November 5th. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian has been working on this book for seven years.

Goodwin has devoted her research and writing career to studying American presidents; her subjects have included John F. KennedyLyndon B. Johnson, and Abraham Lincoln. Last year, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln movie enjoyed great success and made her a Hollywood name. To learn more, check out her TED talk.

World Book Night Titles Announced for 2014

lwqzpyn7y8q8dmnbh44f-292x300On April 23, 2014, thousands of bibliophiles will give away half million books in the United States to celebrate World Book Night.

Below, we’ve listed the all of the titles that will be given away. To take part in this event, follow this link to learn more details and fill out an application to be a book giver.

Shelf Awareness reports that this year’s selections “includes the first graphic novel, first university press title and first Asian-American authors. As before, one book is in English and Spanish, and two are available in large-print editions. In addition, the 35 titles were an increase from the previous years’ 30, allowing more authors and publishers to be represented.”

Lincoln Nominated for 12 Academy Awards

Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin has lead the Academy Award nominations this year, earning 12 Oscar nominations.

Tony Kushner’s Lincoln Screenplay Published

The Theatre Communications Group will be publishing the Lincoln screenplay on January 22, 2013. Above, we’ve embedded the official trailer of the adaptation of Doris Kearns Goodwin‘s nonfiction book.

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tony Kushner adapted the book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, for Oscar-winning director Stephen Spielberg‘s latest silver screen flick. Goodwin has agreed to pen a foreword for the Lincoln publication. The book will contain eight pages of color photographs from the movie.

Here’s more from the release: “Kushner’s plays include Angels in America, Parts One and TwoA Bright Room Called Day; Slavs!; Homebody/Kabul;Caroline, or Change, a musical with composer Jeanine Tesori; and The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the  Scriptures. He wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ film of Angels in America and for Steven Spielberg’s Munich.”

Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner To Adapt Team of Rivals

Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin‘s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln will be adapted by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.

Pulitzer/Tony-winning writer Tony Kushner will handle the screenplay. According to Deadline, “it is anticipated that the film will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.”

Spielberg has hired two Oscar-winning actors to star in this film. Daniel Day-Lewis will play President Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field will play First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.

Friends Will Tour for Halberstam’s Final Opus

And speaking of Hillel Italie, he also reports on what friends of the late journalist and historian David Halberstam are planning for THE COLDEST WINTER, Halberstam’s final published work that will be released by Hyperion this October. Joan Didion, Seymour Hersh, Doris Kearns Goodwin and others will read coast to coast to spread the word about Halberstam’s account of the Korean War.

“He thought that it was the best work he had done since The Best and the Brightest,” says Halberstam’s widow, Jean Halberstam, referring to her husband’s book on Vietnam. “He had been thinking about doing this book since he was in Vietnam. It was always in the back of his mind.” Highlights of the promotional tour will include Didion reading in New York City; former basketball great Bill Walton in La Jolla, Calif.; Hersh in Washington, D.C.; Anna Quindlen in Milwaukee, and Goodwin and fellow author Samantha Power in Cambridge, Mass.
