Kenneth Oppel & Jon Klassen Ink Deal With Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Oppel & KlassenPrintz Honor-winning writer Kenneth Oppel and Caldecott Medal-winning artist Jon Klassen will partner to create a middle grade novel entitled The Nest.

The story follows a boy named Steve as he and his family navigates through the difficulties of caring for Steve’s sick baby brother. This will be the first time Oppel (pictured, via) and Klassen (pictured, via) collaborate on a book project.

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers publisher Justin Chanda negotiated the deal with Writer’s House literary agent Steve Malk. Chanda will edit the manuscript. A release date has been scheduled for Fall 2015.

Jon Klassen Named Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal

This is Not My HatJon Klassen has been named the winner of the 2014 Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration.

Klassen was presented with this award for his 2012 title, This is Not My Hat. According to the press release, Klassen’s hit picture book “will go into the history books as the first ever title to win both the UK’s highest illustration honor with the Kate Greenaway Medal, and also win the most prestigious award for children’s book illustration in the US, the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which was awarded in 2013.”

The same year that Klassen received a Caldecott Medal for This is Not My Hat, he also earned a Caldecott Honor for Extra Yarn which is written by Mac Barnett. Klassen and Barnett will team up once again for a new project entitled Sam and Dave Dig a Hole; Candlewick Press plans to release it in October 2014. What do you think?

Jon Klassen and Mac Barnett to Team Up for New Picture Book Project

candlewickCaldecott Medal winner Jon Klassen and acclaimed children’s author Mac Barnett will collaborate on a book called Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.

Klassen and Barnett first teamed up on a picture book entitled Extra Yarn; it went on to earn a Caldecott Honor in 2013. Candlewick Press has acquired this new project. According to the press release, a publication date has been scheduled for October 14, 2014.

Associate publisher Liz Bicknell negotiated the deal with Writers House literary agent Steven Malk. Bicknell will edit the manuscript. Art director Ann Stott will work on the design.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate has won the prestigious John Newbery Medal and Jon Klassen has won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for This Is Not My Hat at the American Library Association’s annual Youth Media Awards.

Free Samples of Indies Choice Book Award Winners

The American Booksellers Association (ABA) has revealed the winners of the 2012 Indies Choice Book Awards and the E.B. White Read-Aloud Awards, books that show “the spirit of independent bookstores.” Below, we’ve linked to free samples of all the winners.

In an odd turn of events, brother and sister authors Maile Meloy and Colin Meloy tied for the E.B. White Read-Aloud Award this year.

ABA CEO Oren Teicher had this statement: “After a month of voting by the owners and staff at independent bookstores across the country, we have an outstanding list of winners that reflects the types of books independent bookstores champion best … We look forward to saluting the winners and honor recipients at the Celebration of Bookselling Author Awards Luncheon on June 5 at BEA.”
