The Dark Side of Crossword Puzzles

deanolsher.jpgAs one writer and radio reporter discovered, crossword puzzles tap the most obsessive side of the human brain–taking some players to dark places.

Today’s special guest on the Morning Media Menu was Dean Olsher, a 30-year veteran of radio who has worked everywhere from NPR to Sirius Satellite Radio. He discussed his new book, “From Square One: A Meditation, with Digressions, on Crosswords.”

During the discussion, Olsher shared tips for aspiring radio journalists. Here’s an excerpt from the interview: “It’s definitely an obsessive behavior, and addictive in the literal sense … Along the way in my research I met a homeless guy in New York City who bought the NY Post and the NY Daily News every day with change he’d begged–just so he could do the crossword.”
