This experience inspired me to write a reporter’s diary of the election, which was published in American Journalism Review. * Reporter in Florida during anthrax outbreak in Boca Raton in Spring, 2002. Highlights from the Orlando Sentinel include: * Lead reporter on child abuse death of 6-year-old Kayla McKean, killed by her father on Thanksgiving, 1998. Kayla’s death touched off a firestorm of controversy against the state Department of Children & Families, the agency charged with investigating abuse allegations. Social workers followed up on numerous reports of abuse against the little girl, but did not remove her from the home of her father. * Highlights from the Daytona Beach News-Journal include: * Color stories on annual Daytona Beach events, such as the Daytona 500, Spring Break and Bike Week. * Lead reporter on the removal hearing of Chief Judge Gayle Graziano, charged with judicial misconduct including pulling a gun on a law clerk, screaming at employees and using her position as chief judge to get a job for her lover. The removal hearing, brought by the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, was broadcast live on Court TV. Highlights from the Fayetteville Observer include: * Covered the tragic air collision of a C-130 cargo plane with an Air Force jet at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina. Twenty-four paratroopers waiting to board a plane died when a fireball rolled across the tarmac where they were assembled. * Covered the sniper shooting of a deranged Army sergeant at Fort Bragg as he attacked a squad of soldiers during morning P.E. The sniper was wrestled to the ground, barehanded, by a group of Green Berets.
