Steve Jobs Tribute Banners Pop Up in Chicago

Not long after a Hong Kong student, Jonathan Mak, popularized a tribute logo to Steve Jobs, an Apple appreciator in Chicago took his devotion to the next level by setting up Steve Jobs street banners outside the Apple store in honor of his passing.

Eric Brightfield, principal of ImageFiction in Chicago, created the design, printed it on heavy-duty canvas and he and his team installed the banners “under cover of night,” he said in an email.

The banners were still up today, and Brightfield said the Apple employees were under the impression that the city of Chicago presented the tribute.

“I think that is as Steve would have wanted,” Brightfield’s email continued. “Don’t ask for permission. Just do it!” Asked why he created the tribute, Brightfield said it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. “I’m not sure exactly why I did it. It just came to me Friday evening and I thought, ‘Why not?’”

Jobs died last week, the day after Apple announced the newest version of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S, which is set to go on sale Friday. It is predicted to sell more than 18 million units.

Jobs’ immediate cause of death, “respiratory arrest,” was released this week by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office. He was 56 and had been battling pancreatic cancer for many years.

A memorial service for Jobs is set for October 19 at 10 am at Apple’s Cupertino, California, headquarters.
