Brazilian President Rousseff Speaks for Women, Emerging Countries

Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff today became the first woman to ever open debate at the United Nations General Assembly, making her speech a call for an end to gender discrimination and the dominance of just a few of the world’s nations.

She called upon all countries affected by the economic recession (which is all countries) to play a role in its solution. Brazil, an emerging market itself, is vying for membership on the U.N. Security Council. However, the President’s focus on domestic issues has prompted some to say she’s not using the foreign policy “marketing tool” that her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, did.

She also received support from the chamber when she pushed for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Above, we have a translated video of Rousseff’s speech.
