Even the Pope Isn’t Infallible on Twitter

Mistakes on Twitter: we’ve all made them. Hell, we tweeted an incorrect link this morning.

But when you have four million extremely devoted followers, even the smallest slip-up can lead to an inordinate amount of attention–most of it negative.

Today the team behind the Vatican’s own Pope Francis, who we’ve recognized in the past for their social media prowess, added one letter too many to a tweet about two stories that are no laughing matter…and unleashed a stream of NSFW replies that we won’t feature here (because those people don’t need any more attention).

The very succinct point is that social media is run by humans who require oversight and a strict approval process. Everybody screws up once in a while–even those who answer to a power far higher than Twitter.
