New Car Clip Looks More Like a Perfume Ad

Mercedes has teamed up with fashion label Calvin Klein and supermodel Lara Stone for the video above — Stone gets out of a fancy car wearing a black designer outfit in a tornado and then gets swept up into the sky. The end.

The car only makes a brief appearance before the focus is squarely on Stone’s face and its various muted expressions. She’s awfully serene for someone who’s taking a bumpy trip to Oz. But the bigger question is what this does for promoting the designer and the car. The clip is part of the Mercedes-Benz “Icons of Style” campaign that will be making its debut during New York Fashion Week, February 9th through the 15th.

For a minute, the video reminds us of a perfume ad. Something strangely elegant and oddly random is happening to a model and, oh by the way, buy this thing. But perfume ads usually push the envelope on either weirdness or sleekness a lot farther. We would have loved to see more hair sweeping, clothes tumbling, items flying, and screeching. Maybe the car could’ve been tossed over in the wind. Drama!
