PR FAIL: MA Transit Officials Apologize for Fire/Smoke Drill at Logan Airport on 9/11

Being that I live in Massachusetts, this was the first story I saw on my local news channel this afternoon, prompting me to pop back up out of the chair I had just flopped into and exclaim, “you have got to be f*cking’ kidding me!”

Today, on the 12th anniversary of Sept. 11, officials at Boston’s Logan International Airport gave the green light for a fire drill that included flames and thick black smoke. Keep in mind, two of the planes used in the 2001 terrorist attacks took off from Logan.

Before the drill took place, the airport announced the impending exercise on its Twitter feed by saying:

How no one involved said, “Gee, this might not be the best day for this”, flabbergasts me beyond words. And I am far from alone.

After outraged people flooded the airport’s Twitter and Facebook accounts with complaints, Logan officials apologized, saying on the airport’s Facebook page:

“Massport apologizes for conducting the fire training exercise and understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11. Safety and security is our top priority and constant vigilance and readiness is critical, but the exercise should not have taken place on the anniversary of 9/11.”

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick called the incident “just dumb.”

“The timing could not be worse. I know and have a tremendous amount of confidence in the leadership at Massport and I have to believe that they just didn’t catch this and to people who experienced 9/11, many of whom work at Massport, I just feel so sorry.”

Sounds about right.
