Surprise! PR Executive Ranks Among ‘Most Stressful’ Jobs for 2014

CareerCast is at it again. Two years after naming “Public Relations Executive” the 7th stressful-est job on the planet, the listings group released the latest version of its annual report designed to determine which careers correlate most directly with chronic alcoholism.

You may be shocked to learn that “Event Coordinator” and “PR Exec” each jumped one place on the top ten list—they’re now at #5 and #6, respectively.

We’ve already established the fact that such lists are totally subjective and serve primarily to start “conversations”, so let’s ask some alternate questions…

PR/Marketing Gigs Somehow Appear on Both ‘Overrated’ and ‘Underrated’ Job Lists

Today in Clickbait Posing As Research news, job listings company CareerCast tried to top LinkedIn‘s “most misunderstood jobs” story with lists of the “most overrated” and “most underrated” gigs in the market. Let us be the first to tell you that “public relations manager” somehow appeared near the top of the former list, while many jobseekers apparently underestimate how cool it can be to work as a “market research analyst.”

These contradictory rankings should serve as red flags outing the studies as nonsense, but we’ll try to figure out the reasoning behind them anyway.

Once Again, ‘PR Exec’ on the Most Stressful List

CareerCast has released its list of best, worst, most stressful, and least stressful jobs for 2012. And coming in at number seven on the most stressful list is PR executive. Yikes.

Last year, PR officer came in at number two on this list. And in 2010, that job was number eight. This year’s determination was made for much the same reason as 2011: it’s a “highly competitive” field that requires public speaking, interaction with “potentially hostile members of the media,” and follows tight deadlines. Average pay is listed as $91,810.

What Makes PR So Darn Stressful?

CareerCast has released its list of 2012′s most stressful jobs. At number seven: PR executive.

CareerCast’s job description says PR pros are often responsible for addressing large crowds, work in public, and keep tight deadlines, not to mention the hostility coming from the media, particularly in a crisis situation. It also says the average pay is $91,810.

PR Daily notes that last year, CareerCast had PR pro listed at number two on the most stressful list.
