  • Ogilvy‘s western division will handle PR duties for Energy Upgrade California, a self-described “energy management brand and marketing initiative” created by the state’s energy and utility commissions and the California Center for Sustainable Energy. Ogilvy began work on a rebranding project in February and will continue assisting the group in its noble attempts to help Californians better manage their own energy consumption–an effort that will occupy the minds behind all four area Ogilvy practices.

Openings: Make Them Big, Just Don’t Focus on Making Them ‘Grand’

Nothing says Grand Opening quite like a “ribbon cutting” ceremony. A few VIPs, a big pair of scissors and, voila, your operation is off and running. There was a time when that type of ceremony, including the stock photo and a couple of nice media placements, was a good way to hit the ground running.

These days, however, if you’ve waited for the Grand Opening to make a big splash then it might just be too late. What you do beforehand in the weeks, if not months, prior to the big day is just as important to what you do when the doors open.

Roll Call: Ogilvy, Hill+Knowlton and More

Ogilvy Public Relations announced that Jennifer Risi, executive vice president, Ogilvy Media Influence and director, Content Creation, has been promoted to managing director, Ogilvy Media Influence and head of North American Media Relations effective immediately. In her new role, Risi will work closely with all North American office heads to deepen the operational excellence of Ogilvy’s media network and to enhance the resources available to clients at the local and national levels. Risi will continue to lead a specialist group providing high-level global media counsel and strategic direction to some of Ogilvy’s largest national and global clients. She will also collaborate with Ogilvy & Mather’s marketing disciplines to identify and support media, content and business development opportunities. Risi joined Ogilvy PR in 2011, and for the past three years, has built a robust media relations expertise and New York-based team that supports clients across the agency’s diverse practices with a range of services including global media strategy, CEO and executive visibility, nation branding, and issues management. Hill+Knowlton Strategies has appointed Tali Mackay, a PR vet currently serving as SVP of the firm’s healthcare practice in L.A., to lead its entire U.S. healthcare practice. Mackay doesn’t just bring more than 20 years of communications experience to the role; she was also a registered nurse and public health nurse who completed undergraduate work at University of California at Berkeley and earned her Master of Science in nursing (administration) from San Francisco State University before beginning her comms career in Genentech’s Regulatory Affairs department and moving on to VP of global comms at Baxter BioScience before joining H+K. She takes the helm from David Bowen, who will now “return his whole focus to the global practice he leads.” (Release)

Roll Call: Draftfcb Worldwide, JMPR, CTP and Fortune

Carter Murray will take over as CEO of New York communications agency Draftfcb Worldwide. Murray, who will work out of the agency’s NYC headquarters, joins DFCB after spending a year-plus as president/CEO of Y&R North America. During his career, Murray spent four years as CMO/worldwide account director on Nestle while at Publicis, where he also served as a member of said agency’s executive committee. Though the transition is now underway, Murray’s official start state is still to be determined. Meanwhile, Y&R has welcomed former VML CEO Matt Anthony as its new North American chief exec. JMPR, a lifestyle and transportation firm based in Los Angeles, has hired a new account executive to expand upon its automotive lifestyle team. Ashley Anderson joins the firm after working at Finn Partners, a Ruder Finn company, where she specialized in automotive accounts in addition to serving clients in the customer, healthcare and nonprofit sectors. In her new role, Anderson will work with existing automotive clients like Infiniti while seeking new business for the firm. (Release)

Spin the Agencies of Record

CTP, the Boston-based PR and advertising agency formerly known as Conover Tuttle Pace, has added three clients to its PR roster. The firm will serve as the North American AOR for Objet, an international 3D printer company. Also in the tech practice, the firm has been chosen to provide interactive services to Red Bend Software, a mobile software management company. And the firm is the AOR for the Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club in Cape Cod. In addition to a new name and new clients, CTP is also introducing a new website and logo (left). The firm says it had “double-digit growth in sales and income” in 2011 and its staff grew 30 percent.

The Topps Company, makers of the collectible baseball trading cards, has chosen Warschawski for PR and marketing services. The firm will help with the launch of this year’s gold series of baseball cards that celebrate “Golden Moments,” young players, and more. Topps also makes cards for the NFL, the English Premiere League, the Garbage Pail Kids (ha!), and other groups.
