The Barbie/Girl Scouts Partnership Is Not Going Over Well

girl scout barbieA Girl Scouts-themed Barbie doll is coming to stores this week. And, as one would expect, it is not going over well with parents who think that Barbie is not the best role model for little girls.

The relationship between Mattel and the Girl Scouts was actually forged last year, when the Girl Scouts began to offer a “Be anything. Do everything” patch, the first time the group signed on for a corporate partnership.

“Barbie is basically a terrible role model for girls, and she’s not about what the Girl Scouts’ principles are, which have to do with leadership and courage,” Susan Linn,  director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood tells the Today show.

However, the Girl Scouts have defended the partnership.

“Girls and moms alike associate this doll with the outdoors, camping, giving back in your community, and we think that those are really positive messages to all of our girls,” Kelly Parisi, spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of the USA told the morning show.

The partnership appears to be a mutually beneficial one. But some women can’t get over the fact that a good chunk of Barbie’s appeal is superficial.

Well, It’s About Time to Hate the Girl Scouts…for Political Endorsements?

Typically, around this time of the year, people are avoiding storefronts and grocery stores because the Girl Scouts are out pimping its Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Thin Mints and other sinful cookies. They bum rush people trying to get to the organic food section and end up walking away with about one trillion calories in their bag.

That’s not this type of hatred.

No, it seems the lovely girls of cookie shilling has dipped its pretty, pink toenail into the pool of political endorsements. Wait, what? Yup, and it’s all because of this tweet. We’ll explain more after the jump…

Need a Thin Mints Fix? Download the Girl Scout Cookie App!

Cookie Monsters, rejoice! If your life is plagued by sudden, ravenous, unrelenting cravings for Samoa or Thin Mints cookies, take heart–there’s now officially an app for that!

The new Girl Scout cookie app, unveiled last week, is available for both Apple iOS and Google Android smartphones. Not only does it introduce users to all 16 types of cookies, but this sweet little app helps tagalong junkies find the nearest cookie booth at which they can slake their chocolate/peanut butter lust. Savvy Scouts already used social media to break all sales records in 2012; we have a feeling this app will boost their numbers to even greater heights.

It’s not all about the cookies, though; lest your sugar coma cause you to forget that Girl Scouts aren’t just peddlers of crave-able baked goods in colorful boxes, the organization also hopes to use this app to spread awareness of the youth group’s larger mission.

Spin the Agencies of Record: Evian Chooses Syndicate Media Group, and More

Evian has chosen Syndicate Media Group as its U.S. AOR handling public relations and social media work. According to the press release, the RFP included three other firms who were asked how they would have operated given a set of real Evian initiatives. Or, they were asked to propose new campaigns. Syndicate chose the latter. The firm will be working with the other Evian agencies – MKG, MPG/Mediacontacts, and Euro RSCG — and work will begin in the fourth quarter.

The Girl Scouts have chosen Edelman to lead its centennial PR efforts in 2012. The firm’s work will include media relations, consumer engagement, social media and issues management surrounding topics of importance to girls. The online initiatives will have a shelf life through 2013. CRT/tanaka will continue as AOR for the Girl Scouts providing crisis counsel and helping with centennial efforts.
