Harrington Named Edelman COO, Hass Appointed U.S. President

Edelman has announced a number of leadership changes this morning.

Matthew Harrington has been named global COO, a new position at the firm, effective July 1. In this role, he’ll oversee the company’s four regions (United States, Europe/Middle East/Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Canada/Latin America), chair the Conflict Management Committee, and manage the legal, IT, and HR areas. He’ll also continue to manage the global practices, clients, businesses, and finance operations. We’re tired just thinking about it.

“At moments, it can appear daunting,” Harrington told us over the phone this morning. But Harrington says he’s an “Edelman vet” (he’s been with the firm for 28 years) and he’s worked with firm president and CEO Richard Edelman for decades, so they have a well-established working relationship.

Edelman 2010 Trust Barometer Reveals Jump In Trust For Business

Trust in business is rising slightly, however the public is still very cautious when it comes to counting on business to do the right thing, according to Edelman’s 2010 Trust Barometer, the agency’s annual “trust and credibility” survey.

In the survey, released today, 54 percent of respondents said they trust U.S. business to “do what is right,” an 18 percent jump from last year’s survey, which found trust in business at a ten year low.

“Trust in business has improved, but the patient has a long road to go for a full recovery…Companies will have to prove the skeptics wrong and show they can achieve both profit and purpose,” said Edelman president and CEO Richard Edelman.

CEOs experienced a jump in trust, as 31 percent expressed trust in information from a company’s CEO – up 12 points, from 19 percent last year. The 31 percent figure is still very low, however.

Not surprisingly, trust in banks is near the bottom of the list, declining from 71 percent to 33 percent over the past two years.

Trust in government rose 16 points since last year, to 46 percent, “one of the largest increases in trust in government among the countries surveyed,” according to the report.

That’s not to say people aren’t skeptical.

Edelman Moves New York Office to Downtown Location

Edelman officially announced today the agency’s move to a new office and global co-headquarters in New York. The new office is located at 250 Hudson Street in Lower Manhattan. 500 Edelman employees have been moved to this location from previous Edelman offices in Times Square and Park Avenue South.

“Over the past decade, Edelman’s New York operation has grown significantly. The time had come for new space that reflected the full-service communications consultancy we are today,” said Matthew Harrington, U.S. President & CEO in a statement.

Going with the new and popular “open layout” trend, the new office doesn’t have “offices,” per se. However there are “numerous private areas to provide staff members with a place to go for more focused, solitary work,” said the company in a release. Click continued to view pictures of the new office layout and its rooftop space.
