Chuck Hagel and ‘Friends of Hamas’: Anatomy of a Smear Campaign

Chuck HagelDon’t you just hate it when people (especially anonymous people) spread false claims about yourself or your clients? Everybody does! This week’s journalistic hackery scandal isn’t really our stock in trade, but it is certainly an interesting one for anyone concerned with promoting stories and earning media mentions for clients.

Here’s the summary: in January President Obama nominated Chuck Hagel, a former Republican senator, for the Secretary of Defense position. Unfriendly media outlets soon began running stories about Hagel’s supposed ties to anti-Israel advocacy organizations, eventually dropping the ominous name “Friends of Hamas.”

Whatever Hagel’s politics may be, there is no such group–but that fact didn’t stop the story from spreading.

Today a reporter for the New York Daily News published a column identifying himself as the (unintentional) source of the smear. Dan Friedman called a source within the U.S. Senate two weeks ago to ask whether there might be any truth to rumors, floated by Hagel opponents, that accused him of making paid appearances before anti-Israel groups. Friedman jokingly suggested the names “Friends of Hamas” and “Junior League of Hezbollah.”

Things only went downhill from there.

UPDATE: Chick-fil-A Still Very Much Anti-Gay Marriage

This week we all wondered whether to believe the stories about Chick-fil-A’s supposed decision to stop donating to anti-gay groups. If it sounded too good to be true, that’s because it was.

Turns out that, as reported by The Advocate, the poultry-parts chain can still support “pro family” groups ‘til the cows come home without violating the “agreement” it reached with Chicago alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno—as long as its charity doesn’t donate directly to these groups. It’s what we call a massive loophole.

For example, on Tuesday Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy tweeted a picture of himself taking part in the WinShape Ride for the Family. It’s an event designed to raise money for the Marriage and Family Foundation, an advocacy group founded by the Cathy family that lobbies against various marriage equality laws.

Did Cathy violate his company’s earlier “agreement” to stop donating to those groups?

Update on Chick-fil-A Backlash: Same-Sex Kiss Day VS. Appreciation Day

As we previously reported, anti-gay marriage comments made by Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy have polarized fast-food lovers everywhere. On Wednesday, Chick-fil-A supporters converged in droves upon its restaurant locations all over the nation for “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day”, resulting in “record setting” sales, according to ABC News. But today, those on the other side of the argument plan to have their say.

“National Same-Sex Kiss Day at Chick-fil-A”, which takes place today in protest of Cathy’s comments, encourages same-sex couples to take a photo or video of themselves kissing at their local Chick-fil-A. It has yet to be seen how many will turn out for the kiss-in, but the Facebook event page, which has over 13,000 confirmed participants, states the following:

“In honor of their support for love, equality, and the real definition of family, we’re holding a NATIONAL Same Sex Kiss Day at Chick Fil A’s around the country. So grab a friend (or 20) and head out to your nearest Chick Fil A! And don’t forget to post photos/videos of it here! For all the world to see!

We would also like to clarify that this event was NOT created as a response to Mike Huckabee’s appreciation day, this event was created on July 19, several days before Mike Huckabee announced his plans for Wednesday August 1.”

Celebs Use Coarse Language to Tackle Famine in Africa

Celebs as diverse as including Bono, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, and Mike Huckabee appear in the above PSA from One.org, getting bleeped over and over for using rough language. But it’s not what you think. The PSA and accompanying campaign seek to raise awareness about the ongoing famine in the horn of Africa.

The Wacky World of Republican Presidential Announcements

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Donald Trump has made it official, via statement issued today, that he will not be running for President. While maintaining his “strong conviction” that he could win office, he said in that statement, “business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.” Translation: I got a ton of publicity, NBC picked up my show for another year, so I’m done with my political show and we can now return to our regularly scheduled episode of The Apprentice. Peace out.

But before that statement he issued another video statement in support of Mike Huckabee‘s decision not to run, which had the Meet the Press roundtable panel in hysterics. (You can watch that above.) Huckabee announced Saturday night at the end of his show (and just in time for the Sunday morning political programs) that he wouldn’t be running.

“Mike, enjoy the show. Your ratings are terrific, you’re making a lot of money, you’re building a beautiful house in Florida. Good luck,” said Trump. Wha?

Trump May Announce His Presidential Run During The Season Finale of ‘The Apprentice’

We continue to find Donald Trump repellent, yet he manages to keep our attention with his nonsense.

The latest from his absurd campaign to tell us whether he’ll be campaigning for President: He may make an announcement during the season finale of The Celebrity Apprentice on May 15. So he’s set up a win-win here for ratings (in theory) — people will watch to find out who wins the show and/or they’ll tune in to see if this joke on our electoral system will come to an end sooner rather than later. And if he doesn’t make the announcement, he’s set himself up for more media attention; Yahoo News says he might have a press conference instead.

Even more ridiculous than this situation (and his hair, and his recent statements about President Obama and “the blacks”) is the fact that polls show him leading the Republican pack.

Michelle Obama Gets GOP Support

Photo:Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP

Our fabulous FLOTUS Michelle Obama (making history at left, according to People, for being the first first lady to wear vintage – a Norman Norell – for a public appearance. We loves!) is getting support for her anti-obesity campaign from Republicans. It’s insanity that this is partisan or political, but these days, what isn’t.

Sarah Palin lashed out against Michelle Obama’s efforts on her show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, by making s’mores in support of dessert. And again she took on the campaign on Laura Ingraham’s radio program while there to promote her book.

“The first lady should ‘get off our back and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions,’” the Washington Post quotes Palin. The anti-obesity effort falls under the “nanny state” heading that Palin and others have rallied against apparently.
