Oh Hi: We’re Throwing a Party Next Week and You’re Invited!

Mad Men, AMC copyrights, etc....And now a quick note to all readers, friends, blog trolls and forgotten boarding school roommates in the greater New York metropolitan area who don’t have incredibly important business to attend to next Tuesday night (that means all of you): PRNewser will be throwing its first party of 2013 with the help of the Mediabistro events team, The Empire Room and our fine sponsors at Horn Group.

Some details, ’cause you know you want ‘em: the event will take place Tuesday, March 19th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (yes, that’s one week from today). The venue will be The Empire Room, a “Deco lounge” at the base of the Empire State Building on 33rd Street between 5th Avenue and Broadway on the island of Manhattan. The host will be your truly humble editor, who will say a few awkward things into a microphone before impressing everyone in attendance with his growing tolerance for hard liquor! (Ed. note: I don’t do Scotch though, sorry. It’s a flavor thing.)

Most importantly, the first 100 guests to arrive will receive a ticket for a free drink–once again courtesy of our sponsors at Horn. Our 12 Favorite PR Stories of 2012 (Part 1)

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen lots of “best” and “worst” lists for the PR year that (almost) was. Most of them were well-researched, informative overviews that helped give us a fuller picture of a topsy-turvy year in public relations.

We debated whether to put our heads together, conduct a survey, consult the Twittersphere and create the definitive list of 2012′s most important/influential PR stories. But then we just decided to put all that reasoned analysis aside and go completely subjective—so we compiled our 12 favorite stories that appeared on PRNewser in 2012.

Some are serious, some are silly and some are nearly unbelievable. Do they all reveal some larger truth about the PR industry? No. Are they the most important stories of the year? Definitely not. Then why did we choose them? Because we really enjoyed reading and writing them. That’s pretty much it.

JCPenney Loves 4-H Club

Despite some common misconceptions, 4-H is not just an agricultural club (although this PRNewser writer and former 4-H member did spend the summers of her youth happily raising vegetables and dragging impeccably-groomed sheep around a show ring). In reality, 4-H is a community of six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. The H’s stand for head, heart, hands, and health, as demonstrated in the pledge that each member takes: “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world.” Who doesn’t love that message? Now, retail leader and longtime supporter JCPenney has taken a pledge of their own.

4-H has been a part of JCPenney’s philanthropic focus throughout the company’s history–Mr. James Cash Penney himself was actively involved with the organization for almost 50 years. Now the company is taking their dedication to 4-H a step further with “JCP Cares“, a new charitable giving program encouraging customers to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar and donate the difference. This month, National 4-H Council is one of two featured charity partners (the other being Boys & Girls Club of America). August is probably a smart month to feature these two organizations, because families shopping for back-to-school attire will be especially attuned to messages promoting educational and cultural enrichment programs for American children.
