Bears Receiver Announces His New Contract on The View

We never thought an athlete would choose The View to make a major career announcement, especially in the middle of the off-season.

Today, however Bears receiver Brandon Marshall brought the news to Whoopi, Sherri and company before the rest of the world: he was going to re-sign with the team for another three seasons.

There’s more to the story than that, though–and it may explain his choice of venue.

PR Challenge: What Should the World’s Ugliest Animal Do Now?

This week the Ugly Animal Preservation Society announced that the blobfish has officially won the title of being the ugliest animal on the planet. This, of course, is not good news for any living creature—especially one that is endangered not because it is edible and delicious, but because it is brutally scooped up in huge trawling nets and discarded as worthless bycatch.

As PR professionals, there must be something we can do to help. This loveable monstrosity must continue to exist on earth and gross out our children and grandchildren for generations to come. Certainly, there must be something we can do. PR experts run towards these sorts of challenges, not shy away from them.

So, should the blobfish hit the talk show circuit and appear on The View, next to David Letterman, and beside Jon Stewart and plead its case to the public? Will the public ever accept the blobfish, rally around its plight and take action to guarantee its safety? After all, its not like the blobfish has been publicly derailed by a drug conviction, sex scandal or money laundering scheme. It’s one and only crime is that it is ugly.

As PR professionals, what advice would you give the blobfish that might save its very existence on earth? Should the blobfish publicly apologize for being ugly? Should the blobfish adopt a baby clownfish—everyone loves those from Finding Nemo? Or should the blobfish lay low and disappear for a while, fade from public view and hope for the best?

What advice would you give the blobfish?

The Obama Administration: PR Masterminds?

On Monday, Politico posted a story with the traffic-bait headline “Obama, the puppet master“. Why is it relevant to us? Because it’s really about the administration’s masterful use of modern PR tools and techniques to get its message across to the American people–whether the press likes it or not.

So what makes the Obama team’s approach to public relations so brilliant? Let’s review Politico’s assessment of its strategy, point by point:

1. Choose friendly media outlets and avoid tough questions. This is an old chestnut followed by all politicians, and it doesn’t just relate to ideology: Obama went on Fox News more than once. But, as Politico puts it, why answer tough questions from The New York Times or anyone else when you can go on The View?

This is an important point: Obama has given more interviews than any other recent president, but he largely refuses to sit down for print queries with the NYT, The Washington Post or The Wall Street Journal in order to avoid “tough, unpredictable questions.”

PR Diva Death Match: Mariah Carey vs. Nicki Minaj

Today in TV Karaoke Competition News: The hottest gossip in the world of tee-vee at the moment appears to involve a battle of egos between new American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj (with a little BabaWa thrown in for good measure).

Excited yet? The “exclusive” TMZ video of the two arguing during Idol auditions resembles the beginning of history’s most tedious catfight. We can’t really understand any of it, but we get the general impression that Nicki is a little intimidated by Mariah’s seniority and that Ms. Carey is playing this year’s J.Lo by steadfastly refusing to be upstaged by anyone.

One thing is clear: Barbara Walters raised the stakes on Thursday’s episode of The View by repeating Mariah’s claim that Nicki threatened to “shoot the — b*tch” while walking offstage. Minaj then got a bit defensive (and slightly insane) on Twitter, mocking Carey for hiring more bodyguards while the show’s publicists loudly claimed that no one had made anything resembling a death threat.

Is this what passes for excitement in Seacrest-world? We’re already bored, but we guess we need to ask what the show’s producers and third-party stars think about all this deadly-serious drama.
