Global Internet Usage Passes the Three Billion Mark

That’s the big takeaway from a study published by “global conversation agency” We Are Social and data company InternetLiveStats today.

The general trends won’t surprise you, but they’re worth a review:

Some more interesting findings: mobile is even more here than we thought: an estimated 3/4 of the 3 billion people who access the Internet do so via mobile device. These numbers are even higher for socially connected users…and they’re rapidly increasing, of course.

The only surprises concern international audiences, but they’re worth noting: when it comes to total membership, networks we use every day like LinkedIn and Instagram rank far below others like QZone, WeChat and, yes, Google+.

Snapchat isn’t even on the list.

In other news, this is the number of emails supposedly sent so far today.

What do successful men with decades of experience in their fields buy for themselves as mortality creeps ever closer? Some buy sports cars; some buy motorcycles and matching leather jackets; some donate millions to charity; some “buy” newer, younger wives.

Chinese mega-investor Oscar Zhao just bought 80-something percent of London digital agency We Are Social, and Richard Edelman deemed the event important enough to rank it #3 on his 10 most important events of the year list this week.

Roll Call: Edelman, 360 Public Relations, We Are Social and More

Edelman PR announced this week that Ruth Edelman will serve as deputy chairman of parent company DJE Holdings following the January passing of her husband, company founder Daniel J. Edelman. This will be a non-executive role; Edelman will provide counsel to both clients and executives while also hosting agency-sponsored events. A new non-executive DJE chairman will be chosen from outside the company in due course. (Release)

360 Public Relations announced the addition of Meredith Gandy as senior publicist in the agency’s growing New York office. Gandy previously served as Senior Publicist at KQED, the Bay Area’s PBS station. She garnered attention for prime-time, nationally acclaimed programming, such as “Saving the Bay” and ” China From the Inside.”  Most recently at KQED, Gandy supervised national efforts for the top-rated PBS KIDS program, “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!” Gandy will contribute to clients based in 360PR’s New York and Boston offices. A+P will promote the company’s product launches, events and sponsorships as well as its cause marketing initiatives and its legacy-inspired Onitsuka Tiger collection of shoes and apparel. Fenton appointed Susan McPherson as Senior Vice President in its New York office. McPherson will further develop the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility practice, which has a long tradition of working to align companies’ business practices with a commitment to the public interest. (Release)

We Are Social, the world’s largest independent social media agency, added two senior members to its fast-growing New York office. Layla Revis joins the agency as senior director, working on a range of fashion and luxury accounts. She was previously vice president at social@Ogilvy, part of Ogilvy & Mather. Erin Dorr comes on board as account director, focusing on sports and lifestyle brands.  She joins We Are Social from Dachis Group, where she managed social media and advocacy programs for clients such as Nestle, U.S. Cellular, HP and Kodak. Ogilvy PR has hired Rebecca Davis to serve as EVP of the 360 Digital Influence practice in Washington D.C. Previously, she worked at Discovery Communications where she developed digital and brand strategies for the U.S. networks.

Christal Goetz joins APCO Worldwide as SVP and a member of the firm’s leadership team for the global online and creative practice. Goetz joins from New Media Strategies where she built the firm’s corporate practice.

Resolute Consulting has announced three promotions. Anne-Marie St. Germaine, previously chief creative officer, is now MD and leads the public-private partnership and infrastructure practice. John McGovern has moved from VP to EVP. He has led the firm’s corporate, financial, and legal comms practice since joining in 2007. And Jim Soreng has been promoted to VP from SAE. He has a specialty in advocacy campaigns.
